Join our dynamic podcast discussion with MARTHA GONZALEZ, Chican@ Artivista! Martha Gonzalez was born and raised in East Los Angeles. She is the author of our new favorite book, Chican@ Artivistas: Music, Community, and Transborder Tactics in East Los Angeles. She is a crazy talented and wildly enthusiastic musician & singer/songwriter, member of the Grammy Award–winning band Quetzal, and she is allllllll about collective songwriting. But wait, there’s more: she is the Assistant Professor in the Intercollegiate Department of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies at Scripps/Claremont College. As a feminist music theorist and scholar, with a focus on Chicana feminist theory, transnational studies, performance studies, and ethnomusicology, her scholarship articulates the various ways in which Chicana, Latinx and other communities of color utilize music and other forms of creative expression not solely as politically charged commentary and/or community building projects, but as necessary dialectic tools toward various social justice ends. BAM!

"Serious business contracts for residuals, long-term career advancement, and financial freedom are what I've been promoting for years as an artist. The biz of art is sullied with horrible business practices that do not support artists. At All.

"Having and doing essential work to create a sustainable and just market for artists is priceless 😉 In addition to the work that W.A.G.E. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy) core organizer Lise Soskolne continues to do alongside the resurfacing of the F.A.R.E. (Fare Artists' Reserved Equity) and T.A.R.T. (Transfer Agreement and Record of Transfer) initially created in 1971 by curator/artist Seth Siegelaub and attorney Robert Projansky - which most recently artist Virginia Broersma and attorney Susan Schwartz based in LA have revised and are disseminating.

"This is Artivism. I'm happy to know that this is moving forward. Now we must unite as artists, collectors, museum and gallery professionals to take care of us. Especially with the onset of NFTs, we need to make sure these careers we invest in provide a return - a legacy - for generations to come. Again, it's business as well as art."

- Janet E. Dandridge

In an effort to thwart flippers, the show's curator Destinee Ross-Sutton has developed a list of terms to which buyers must agree.

In honor and memory of the ancestors who were enslaved, treated as non-human, mentally and physically tortured, violently coerced and brought to Point Comfort in Hampton, Virginia on August 20, 1619.

Learning histories is a path to understanding. And with that understanding, we urge empathy and collective action for the betterment of self and society.
