Death of the Yamuna
The conditions are getting worse.

Yamuna is the second largest tributary of River Ganga and the longest tributary of India, it originates from Yamunotri glacier in Uttarakhand and flows across seven states and merges with the river Ganga at Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Religious Significance: Yamuna is worshipped in Hinduism as the ‘Goddess Yamuna’ and as per Hindu mythology is the daughter of the Sun and sister of the Yama the ‘God of Death’. It is common practice for people to bathe in the sacred waters to rid oneself of sins and the last rites of the dead are also performed at its banks.

Socioeconomic Significance: It helps create the highly fertile alluvial Yamuna- in the Indo-Gangetic plain. Nearly 57 million people depend on the Yamuna’s waters. With an annual flow of about 10,000 cubic billion metres, the river accounts for more than 70% of Delhi’s water supply.

Man sentenced to death 26 days after ra**ng 5-year-old girl

A special POCSO court in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district on Wednesday awarded death penalty to a man for ra**ng a 5-year-old girl 26 days ago and appreciated the swift action by the police in the case.

According to the police, the 21-year-old man abducted the girl who was playing in an agriculture field near her house on the evening of February 19. Other children informed the girl’s parents about it following which police were alerted.

The girl was found in an injured state at an isolated place. The accused was identified and arrested five hours later.

Investigating officer in the case Suresh Sharma, who is the circle officer of Chirawa, said the court convicted the man on Tuesday and pronounced the death penalty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Wednesday.

“Swift action was taken in the case and all evidence collected. The charge sheet was filed and the court pronounced the judgment today,” he said.

The court also appreciated the investigation conducted by the police, saying it was an example of an ideal investigation which contained direct, scientific, electronic and circumstantial evidence.

It was observed that the circumstantial evidence collected by the police was enough to prove the case.

Hailing the judgment, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the police filed the charge sheet within nine days and the court delivered judgment within 26 days of the incident.

“This is an example of the efficiency of the police, judiciary and the government’s commitment to bring justice to the victim,” he tweeted.

Rajasthan police chief M L Lather also congratulated the Jhunjhunu police team.

Inspector General of Jaipur Hawa Singh Ghumariya said more than 40 witnesses and around 250 documents were presented in the court. The police worked for 12-13 hours a day and submitted the charge sheet, Gehlot said.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministers of Nepal and China jointly certified the elevation of Mount Everest at 8,848.86 metres above sea level — 86 cm higherthan what was recognised since 1954. The common declaration meant that the two countries have shed their long-standing difference in opinion about the mountain’s height — 29,017 feet (8,844 m) claimed by China and 29,028 ft (8,848 m) by Nepal. In feet, the new elevation is about 29,031 ft, or about 3 ft higher than Nepal’s previous claim.

No other mountain has perhaps been the subject of as much debate. Over the years, there have been debates on issues like whether it should be “rock height”, or whether the snow cladding it, too, should be accounted for.
