JUST IN: Meet the hands behind the Creative Tiprasa Handicrafts, Heman Kami ADC Village.
Residing at Heman Kami, ADC village, Mr Sukramani Debbarma is a self-taught expert in handicrafts. Working with bamboo material, Sukramni has experience of 30 years in the field.
Ranging from Traditional items such as Khuturuk, Langa, Chayakhok, Ura ( bamboo basket), Hats and many other items of the Tiprasa tradition, he is skilled in all. His interest in crafts is keeping the Culture & Heritage of the Tripuri people alive as not many are as skilled as he is left in the community.
“I learnt it all on my own & when I see others I observe it and try to do the same, that's how my interest grew more, I've been working on a contract as Teacher & Trainer in many schools but not many students seem to be interested in it these days, said to the Reporter.
When asked if he received any prize for his Excellency he replied, ' Back on the days when I was asked to train 10 Students in a coaching centre for 6 months under Jampuijala Block, I Received an appreciation Prize of Rs. 5000', Working with bamboo needs a lot of patience & hard work maybe that is the reason why people leave it behind, requesting people of our community who are interested, to not leave their work and to learn from senior citizens so that our culture can develop in this field too.
His items are sold out within hours in the market, which shows the growing demand for bamboo crafts in the public, however, the declining number of experts in traditional craftsmanship worries him. People like Sukramani are much more needed in the community to save the rich culture & heritage of Tripura and to teach the coming generation more about the technique of how to improve the skills and to utilise it in the field of Crafts.
