Some foreign airlines are allegedly planning to resume flights to Lagos , Abuja and Port Harcourt airports despite the ban on international commercial flights by the Federal Government in a bid to halt COVID - 19 spread .
Although some of the airlines said their plans could change , it was learnt on Saturday that some of the international carriers had already scheduled some flights to Nigeria from June.
But the Federal Ministry of Aviation declared that such plans would not work until the flight ban was lifted .
Also , the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria said no foreign or local carrier could take decision to fly to or within Nigeria if the government had not opened the airspace.
It was learnt on Saturday that Lufthansa Airlines had included Abuja and Port Harcourt among its 20 long -haul routes to begin flight operations in June.
It was learnt that the carrier had made its first batch of flight reservation available in its booking system .
The company plans to resume long - haul flights in June from Frankfurt to Abuja , Port Harcourt, Toronto , Mexico City , Tel Aviv, Riyadh , Bahrain , Johannesburg, Dubai and Mumbai, among others.
Virgin Atlantic recently announced that beginning from May 16, services for its summer schedule flights from March 28 , 2021 would be on sale , as it had scheduled flights from London Heathrow to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport , Lagos .
But senior Ministry of Aviation officials said although it was nice to hear that airlines were making plans to resume operations , such would not happen until the ban was lifted .
The FG on May 6 extended the suspension of both local and international flights by four weeks.
The government had earlier halted commercial flights by two weeks before it announced the four - week extension .
The Director, Public Affairs , FMA , James Odaudu, said the Presidential Task Force on COVID - 19 had not lifted the ban on commercial flights , whether local or foreign .

As the country continues to experience increase in confirmed COVID - 19 cases , healthcare experts have warned Nigerians using local gin , popularly called ogogoro , as hand sanitisers to desist from it , saying it is ineffective to protect against the infection.
The experts said ogogoro has less than 60 per cent alcohol content that is required to kill viruses , unlike alcohol - based hand sanitisers that have such high level alcoholic content .
They warned that using
ogogoro as hand sanitiser only provides a false sense of security against the virus , maintaining that hand sanitisers with 60- 80 per cent alcohol content are the most effective .
The experts said that in the absence of hand sanitisers , thorough handwashing with soap under running water remains the best option .
Speaking in an exclusive interview with PUNCH HealthWise , a former president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Olumide Akintayo , said people using ogogoro as hand sanitisers will not get any value for it .
“ We don’ t need to create a problem that is not there while trying to solve another .
“ For a standard hand sanitiser to do what it ought to do to prevent against virus , it must have a minimum of 75 per cent alcohol .
“ So , what you have in ogogoro is usually 40 per cent rate or slightly higher, but that will certainly not do the job .
“ People using ogogoro as hand sanitiser will not get any value for it . This is because , the percentage of alcohol you get in it is far less than what it should be in an ideal pharmaceutical formulation, ” Akintayo warned .
The former PSN boss told our Correspondent that the alcohol content in ogogoro is usually between 40 and 45 per cent.
“This is why I said the users will not get any result by using it as hand sanitiser .

Actress , Funke Etti , has said that age does not determine whether an actor would be successful in the movie industry or not.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop , Etti said , “ I don’ t believe that one ’ s age makes an actor less sought after or less popular in the movie industry . I believe that one should always be happy about one’ s age . I’ m 41 but there is no role that I can ’ t play ; acting is my area of specialisation and I love it . For one to be called a professional actor , one has to be versatile .
“For example , I know an actress who is 50 and she ’ s still very fit and on top of her game . One shouldn ’ t let one’ s age make one look tattered . As a matter of fact , one shouldn ’ t look like one ’ s age . But one should also note that in the movie industry , nobody can be there forever ; it ’ s just the grace of God for individual persons. I believe that as one is growing , one is becoming a legend , especially when one is good at what one does . ”
The outspoken actress , who is also a television presenter , noted that acting goes beyond having a pretty face , attractive features and material possessions. She said , “ Personally, I don’ t believe that the movie industry favours people with attractive body features and pretty faces. There are a lot of pretty people but if a director gives one the opportunity to act and one doesn ’ t prove oneself , the director won ’ t use one . It’ s what one can offer and one’ s intellectual capacity that matters . If one doesn’ t interpret roles well , directors wouldn’ t use one and one would end up being dumped.
“ I know a pretty actress that directors complain about . Whenever they gave her lines , she forgot them and with time , the directors couldn ’ t cope with her . Acting is beyond enviable materials possessions , though it could help one gain grounds faster if one is good at one’ s job .
Speaking about actresses who publicly call out one another for snatching their partners , Etti maintained that even the men in question should be blamed for not being transparent about their status and past rendezvous . She said , “ It is wrong for actresses to call out one another over relationship issues.

Medical professionals have warned that people with chronic asthma who use face masks , especially the surgical and clothing type , are exposing themselves to hypoxia.
Hypoxia is a condition in which the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply at the tissue level.
The World Health Organisation described asthma as a common lung condition that causes sporadic breathing difficulties , adding that its strongest risk factors are inhaled substances and particles that may provoke allergic reactions or irritate the airways.
Speaking exclusively , Senior Registrar, Paediatric Department of Massey Street Children Hospital, Lagos , Dr . Mary Uche - Iwuh , explained that, except for social gatherings , asthmatics may not necessarily need to wear face masks .
“ They may have to wear face masks at gatherings as well as ensure hand washing and avoiding touching the mouth , nose and eye . But when they are alone in their car or room , they can remove the face mask, ” she said .
President of Atayese Health Network , Dr . Adeolu Olusodo , also shared this view .
He said someone living with lung - related diseases that demand high level oxygen supply should not be seen using face mask for long because masks reduce oxygen supply to the brain after a period .
“ It is preferable they have a handkerchief to use any time they nurse fear of being compromised .
“ It is advisable for asthmatics and others with related conditions to stay away as much as possible from the public during this COVID - 19 pandemic .
“ They should also be discouraged from going to hospitals for now except when very necessary , ” he cautioned .
Another physician , Dr . Olusola Adeyelu, however , argued that people living with asthma should not be denied wearing of face mask .
“ They are like every other person but with marginal increase in risk.
“ On the other hand, if afflicted by COVID - 19, the proportion of asthmatics that will die will outnumber regular patients.
Meanwhile , the founder of Asthma and Chest Foundation , Prof. Gregory Erhabor , said the fundamental basis for using masks was to prevent those who are infected with the novel coronavirus from infecting those in the area

Hertha Berlin players won ’ t be punished for hugging and kissing as they enjoyed a much - needed victory when German football resumed on Saturday , the Bundesliga confirmed after the match .
In order to obtain the political green light to resume this weekend , the Bundesliga agreed strict rules to avoid the spread of coronavirus .
Yet , while players in other games celebrated with elbow taps or solo dance routines , Hertha ’ s players hugged and kissed as they won , 3 - 0 , in Hoffenheim .
Hertha started the game 13th in the table with only seven wins in 25 games and under new management.
Their Belgian defender Dedryck Boyata kissed team -mate Marko Grujic on the cheek after their team ’ s first goal.
“ The fact is that this is part of football , ” said Bruno Labbadia , who was named as Jurgen Klinsmann ’ s replacement during the lockdown . “We’ ve been tested so many times that we can allow it . ”
“ If you can ’ t celebrate anymore , the whole thing breaks down . I’ m just glad that the team had reason to cheer today . ”
“ Emotions are part of the game . ”
The German Football League had presented the German authorities with a 51- page document, which convinced the federal government and regions that football could be allowed to resume behind closed doors .
In an accompanying document sent to clubs, the DFL said hugging and hand contact in celebration of goals should be avoided and that preference should be given to “ elbow or foot contact ”.
But on Saturday , a DFL spokesman confirmed there would be no punishment , as it had only offered “guidelines ” on how goals should be celebrated.
“ For celebrations , only advice has been given and therefore there can be no sanctions , ” a DFL spokesman said .
As part of its programme to ensure a safe return , the DFL has tested players and coaches regularly for the virus and teams have been in quarantine for the past week .

His remarks came as he spoke at two virtual commencements for high school and university students locked down instead of celebrating their graduations , a rite of passage every spring in the United States .
“ More than anything , this pandemic has fully , finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they ’ re doing , ” Obama told graduates from several dozen historically black colleges and universities at the first ceremony .
“A lot of them aren ’ t even pretending to be in charge , ” he said as he discussed the implications of the pandemic during the online event , without naming any specific leaders .
That celebration was followed by a second , star - studded prime - time ceremony for high school students in which Obama continued along the same lines , telling students to step up where leaders had failed .
“ If the world is going to get better , it ’ s going to be up to you , ” he said .

“ Doing what feels good , what’ s convenient , what’ s easy – that’ s how little kids think . Unfortunately , a lot of so -called grown - ups , including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way - – which is why things are so screwed up , ” he continued .
“ I hope that instead, you decide to ground yourself in values that last , like honesty , hard work, responsibility , fairness, generosity , respect for others. ”
The ceremony , carried by all the major American television networks , flashed between stirring speeches and performances students and celebrities alike , including basketball superstar Lebron James and singers the Jonas Brothers .
James echoed Obama ’ s call for the students to step up, urging them to “Stay close to home ” and help rebuild communities devastated by the virus and shutdowns .

The daughter of a popular gospel singer, Tope Alabi , Ayomiku , has said that her mother ’ s fame will be an advantage for her as an up -and- coming singer .
Ayomiku , who recently released her debut single titled , A Friend , said she would have loved to be an actress or a movie producer , but God had called her to be a gospel minister .
She told Saturday Beats , “ When you have a mother like mine, people would expect you to do just like her or maybe a lot more but in the end , God decides how he wants to use us individually. I think that my mother ’ s identity will make me easily recognised as a gospel artiste . But in the end , people would differentiate us not for bad ; but for good .
“ People expect me to dress or act a certain way but I am not pressured by anything or anyone . I didn ’ t develop interest in music because of my mum . I just really love singing and I’ m also called by God to do this . Left to me , I would have loved to be an actress or a movie producer .
“ It is a blessing and opportunity to be the daughter of such a wonderful musician but at the same time , it feels normal . ”
The 22 - year - old singer also noted that her mum was the brain behind her latest single . She said , “ Just like Tope Alabi , I usually wait on the Holy Spirit to inspire me and when He does, I do as He instructs . I featured my mum because she inspired the song. She told me that we should make a song and I agreed ; that ’ s how the song came about .
“ I want to explore music full -time because that ’ s what I’ ve been called to do but I would love to do other things on the side, though that would be later in life . ”
