Why these are my go-to peas for self-sufficiency. Also, if you want to freeze them, simply blanch in hot water for 30 seconds, freeze on a tray for 2 hours and then place into a freezable container or bag☺️ They will last 9 months, allowing you to enjoy fresh peas during the dark winter.

Just as chef.sam.black and I had arrived at the garden to film, the rain decided to postpone plans for a few minutes. Naturally I decided to go out in it with the camera. At least the ducks were enjoying themselves!

Quickly sharing the basics of the mini hoop house design I'm using. Thanks to jamesprigioni for initial inspiration🔥Material I used for a mini-hoop house to go over a 4ftx10ft (1.2x3m)

3 - 10ft lengths of 2x3 Timber
2 - 10ft lengths of roofing batten 25mmx50mm
2 - 4ft lengths of 2x3 Timber
2 - 2ft lengths of 2x3 Timber
8 - 3m lengths of alcathene pipe 22mm thick
2-3 - Door Hinges
UV Plastic sheeting 16ft x 6ft to allow for plenty of overhang (polytunnel plastic)
80mm nails/screws
40mm nails/screws
Any tape (electrical tape works well)
Thin Wood strips 2.4m 28ft in total (any lengths)
Nails longer than the wood strips
Piece of wood for ventilation

Note - use stainless steel screws and hinge to allow you to easily take the hoop house off one bed and install on another bed 🌿

What do we think of this harvest basket for my future in laws? A little bit of everything by as usual - marmalade, mustard, eggs, edible flowers, kumquats, lettuce, lavender, and bread!

Just how productive can a vegetable garden be? In this reel I share average yield per square metre of growing space I harvested from my kitchen garden that grew over 50 different annual and perennial crops. including herbs, flowers, and soft fruit. I have included US conversions below.

Whilst you can achieve very high yields per square metre, I think it's always important to grow less productive crops that pack a lot of flavour and personality to the garden. Every gardener has their own goals too, and so I hope this is a good starting point on how productive a kitchen garden can be🌿

1 sq metre = 10.7 sq feet
1kg = 2.2lbs
Avg just over 9 portions per square foot

Did you know you could do this with broccoli, kohlrabi, cauliflower leaves etc?🌱

Let's look at the most productive ugly vegetable you can grow! The taste is delicious though with a sweet, nutty, creamy flavour when cooked! Super easy to grow in zones 3-9🌿 Recipe for roasting: Wash and cut into large chunks, drizzle with olive oil, smoked salt, and thyme, mix thoroughly then roast 180°C fan for 40-45min, turning twice.

A goodbye to my garden of 12 years. You can watch the full video along with the backstory on my channel. I am pleased that the garden is going back to the very capable hands of my dad, stevenswelshsmallholding , who got me into all of this in the first place🌿 Stay tuned for what's next!

23/01/2024

Permaculture, a way of thinking outside the box so we can create more resilient and productive systems (garden, farms, communities etc)🌿 This is now my core focus moving forward with the way I want to produce food, and so I decided to make this reel as a little introduction to what it is. The key takeaway is about working with nature, rather than against it.

23/01/2024

Zero-Waste slug trap using rhubarb leaves - apparently the Victorians used to do this too! Best placed late afternoon/early evening, and you can use it multiple times before throwing on the compost bin🌿

22/01/2024

Garlic harvest time! Here is an absolutely delicious way to preserve fresh garlic, which is extra juicy and will help boost flavour. Just to make sure you leave plenty of room above the garlic/honey as it bubbles A LOT. And to use a raw honey only. We have some that’s over a year old and going strong (stored at room temperature).

22/01/2024

This is an incredibly powerful tool for increasing the productivity of your garden. It can be done both outside and undercover, and spread your harvests over the growing season, leading you closer to year-round abundance 🌿 More info in the links in my bio🔗

Recipe from JADAM Ultra Low-Cost Organic Farming book: https://en.jadam.kr/

This is something I've been doing for the last 2 growing seasons and is a fantastic way of improving the health of the soil and plants by adding native biology to your garden's soil. This recipe is called JADAM microbial solution and is amazing at encouraging strong plant roots too, so apply it a day or two before transplanting crops.

It is also great to use diluted whenever you're watering your plants, and if you do it just before rainfall it'll help take the microbes down into the soil. This stuff will really improve your soil noticeably and is so easy to make!

This was a 10litre version (200 litres diluted) perfect for small gardens, but you can scale this up to 60 litres using the same quantities.

This is one of the easiest edible flowers you can grow, tastes a bit like cucumber, and each plant produces on average around 950 flowers!
