Clara launches a call for papers for its Archives section as well as for its new Position(s) section. This is an open call, which means authors can submit at any time. For their paper to be included in forthcoming issue 12 (2026), authors are however invited to submit their abstract by January 12th 2025.

Articles in the section Archives are dedicated to the exploration, valorization and/or problematization of an archive. We invite the articles in this section to investigate little-known archival resources, shed light on the genesis of architectural projects documented therein, and address the new challenges faced by contemporary archival collections (preservation, digitization, decolonization, etc.).

The articles in this section are limited to a maximum of 50,000 characters or 8,000 words (including spaces, notes, bibliography, and captions). They are subject to a double-blind peer review process, which aims at verifying their originality, appropriateness of the adopted research methods, the relevance of their argument and conclusions, their structure and readability.

The section Position(s) gathers short articles that take a stand on current events in the field of architecture. Contributions can take the form of a manifesto, a book review, an exhibition report, or give an account of an educational experience. The format is limited to a maximum of 25,000 characters or 4,000 words (including spaces, notes, bibliography, and captions). Articles in the section Position(s) are not double-blind peer reviewed but evaluated by Clara’s editorial board.

To submit a proposal for Clara’s Archives or Position(s) sections, researchers are invited to send an abstract (400 words) and a short resume to Clara’s editorial board: clara.archi[at]ulb .be.

Clara's Editorial Board is happy to announce the publication of Clara 9, Intermediality in Architecture !

The thematic section " Intermediality in Architecture – Representation and the Aesthetics of Reflexivity" is guest-edited by Victoire Chancel, Carla Frick-Cloupet and Wouter Van Acker.

Issue 9 of Clara journal is available in hard copy (order via clara.archi [at] ulb . be) and on Cairn.info (with a subscription). It will be freely available, also on Clara's website, as of December 2026.

Les propositions de direction de dossier sont les bienvenues à tout moment, mais celles et ceux intéressé·es à diriger le dossier thématique du no 12 sont invité·es à envoyer leur proposition avant le 30 juin 2024. Les propositions sont transmises à clara.archi[at]ulb.be, compilées en un seul fichier pdf (en français ou en anglais), comprenant :

> Un thème : titre et courte présentation de l’argument thématique proposé (300-500 mots).
> Les directeur·ice(s) : nom, courte biographie (100 mots), affiliation, liste de 5 publications significatives.

upcoming issues, starting with issue 12 (to be published in 2026).

Proposals from guest editor(s) are welcome at any time, but guest editors who wish to be considered for issue 12 are requested to submit their proposal before June 30, 2024. Le comité éditorial de la r***e Clara est heureux d'annoncer la sortie du numéro 8, « Modernism Unbound / Modernisme de plein air ». Le dossier thématique « Modernisme de plein air : Architectures et paysages de l’agrarisme » dirigé par Axel Fisher (Université libre de Bruxelles), Aleksa Korolija et Cristina Pallini (Politecnico di Milano) présente six articles (en anglais) qui analysent plusieurs expériences d’arrière-garde qui se sont attachées à proposer des solutions et des visions d’architecture rurale et d’urbanisme villageois. Ces projets, réalisés ou non, et préparés au sein ou pour des institutions étatiques ou para-étatiques, renvoient aux tensions entre expérimentalisme de l’expression architecturale, volonté de modernisation des campagnes, et caractère prétendument atavique du monde rural. L’essai introductif (en français et en anglais) propose un cadre théorique et conceptuel pour situer ces expériences par rapport aux réformes agraires et aux récentes avancées dans le domaine de l’histoire mondiale de l’agriculture, et de l’histoire globale et transnationale.

Le dossier « Archives » présente les projets de rénovation de l’habitat rural développés au Maroc par l’architecte et coopérant belge Jean Hensens notamment au sein du CERF (Centre d’expérimentation, de recherche et de formation), un organisme de recherche et d’études dépendant du ministère de l’Intérieur.

En clôture du volume, un « Aparté » signé par Alice Paris revient sur son mémoire de fin d’études qui opérait à l’interface entre histoires environnementales et architecturales pour analyser des bâtiments ayant en commun d’être construits avec une tôle ondulée semi-circulaire.

The thematic section is devoted to "Modernism Outbound: Architectures and Landscapes of Agrarianism" and guest-edited by Axel Fisher (Université libre de Bruxelles), Aleksa Korolija, and Cristina Pallini (Politecnico di Milano). The six papers collected in this section discuss several rearguard experiments that developed original solutions and visions of rural architecture and village town planning. Whether realized or not, these blueprints, schemes and plans, produced by or for state or para-state organizations, reflect the tensions between the experimental nature of architectural expression, the desire to modernize the countryside, and the alleged atavism of the rural realm. The introductory essay offers a theoretical and conceptual framework to situate these experiments in relation to agrarian reforms and recent advances on the subject in the field of world history of agriculture, and of global and transnational history.

The “Archives” section presents renovation projects of rural housing developed in Morocco by the Belgian architect and “coopérant” Jean Hensens, particularly during his time spent at the CERF (Centre d’expérimentation, recherche et formation), a subsidiary research and training organization of the Ministry of the Interior.

Finally, in the “Aparté” section, Alice Paris looks back at her graduation thesis, which brings together environmental and architectural questions through the study of semi-cylindrical corrugated iron sheet as a building material.

Clara lance un appel à contributions pour sa rubrique Archives ainsi que pour sa nouvelle rubrique intitulée Position(s).

La rubrique Archives est dédiée à l’exploration, la valorisation et/ou la problématisation d’un fonds d’archives. Ces articles sont l’opportunité de faire découvrir des ressources documentaires méconnues, d’éclairer la genèse de projets d’architecture qui y sont documentés, mais aussi d’aborder les nouveaux défis rencontrés par les fonds d’archives contemporains (pré-servation, digitalisation, décolonisation, etc.).

La rubrique Position(s) reprend des articles de format court qui articulent une prise de position par rapport à l’actualité architecturale. Les contributions peuvent prendre la forme d’un texte manifeste, d’une recension de lecture, d’un compte rendu d’exposition ou encore d’un récit d’expérience pédagogique.

Les chercheur·es intéressé·es à soumettre une contribution pour les rubriques Archives ou Position(s) sont invité·es à envoyer un abstract (400 mots) et une courte biographie au comité éditorial de Clara.

Il s'agit d'un appel ouvert. Pour figurer dans les prochains numéros, nous vous invitons toutefois à soumettre vos abstracts au plus vite (no 10, 2024) ou avant la fin du mois du mars 2024 (no 11, 2025).
