Red Lines - Stijn Aertgeerts

Red Lines was commissioned by the Swiss Army Brass Band and their conductor Philipp Werlen. The title is a reference to their very distinctive black uniforms with Red vertical lines. Switzerland is a country with a tremendously rich brass band culture and have some of the best bands in the world. The individual level of musicians is also of incredibly high quality. The work begins very bombastically with continuous 8th notes. This immediately sets the drive for the entire first movement where the low brass and woodwinds can also show off huge sounds several times. It culminates in a grand tutti before the music calms down in the second movement where the euphonium can show its solistic qualities and the band can show a big difference in dynamics and sound. The final movement is driven by the drums and timpani that provide a solid boost to keep moving the thematic material forward in the band and through the percussion solo a big build-up to a glorious finale.

Maalbeek Ad Infinitum - Roger Derongé

The Maalbeek has its source in Relegem, a municipality of Asse, and after 12.6 km flows into the Brussels-Rupel Canal at the 'Verbrande Brug' of Grimbergen. It originates from seepage water, groundwater that comes to the surface under pressure. Via the 'Sprietmolen', it runs along the 'Nekkerbos' to Grimbergen, where there are four more mills. The ‘s Gravenmolen, the Liermolen, the Tommenmolen and the Oyenbrugmolen.

The ostinate represents the origin of the well. Small streams of water gather to form a creek. Very quietly, it passes the 'Beverbos' nature reserve. A thunderstorm is coming and the stream becomes restless. It causes the Maalbeek to overflow and flood many houses. The ‘nekkerbos’: ‘De nekker’ a water devil, who has the power to tempt people into the water. The ‘nekker’ is a creature of folktale belief, known especially as a childhood terrifier. The workings of the water mill: (Small wooden percussion instruments give - the interpretation of the grinding of the grain).

You can hear the sound of the workings of a water mill. The rotation of the large spindle creates a distinctive sound. It creates a kind of rhythmic ostinato. While walking, we visit the 4 water mills located in the territory of Grimbergen. The girl with a whistle and the boy with a drum walk from one mill to the next, playing. To the estuary: the Maalbeek ends its journey in the 'Zeekanaal'. In the conclusion, a hymn is sounded for the Maalbeek.

The music tragedy ‘Phaeton’ depicts the last day of the life of the eponymous figure from Greek mythology. The work is divided into four interacting parts. Various leitmotifs, certain characters and events are featured and follow the development of the story.

Sunrise. It is night, but the first sunlight glimpses over the horizon. The sun is dangling from a fiery chariot, pulled by ferocious kicking horses manhandled by the sun god Phoebus, the only one up to the task. Phaeton watches the sun rise and dreams away at this impressive event.

Phaeton's wish. He learns later that day from his mother, the sea nymph Clymene, that Phoebus is actually his father. Phaeton decides to go and see him. The two meet and Phoebus grants his son a favour: he may wish for whatever he wants. Phaeton wishes he could drive the solar chariot once during a sunrise. His father tries to talk him out of this, as even supreme god Zeus would not dare this mission and it is absolutely fatal for a human being. The overconfident Phaeton perseveres, however, and Phoebus has no choice but to fulfil his promise.

Phaeton's last sunrise. The following morning, the sunrise initially proceeds as the day before, but soon things go wrong. The horses become restless because they do not feel the strong hand and weight of the sun God and they stampede. Phaeton loses control and is terrified. The loose chariot flies up and then back over the earth's surface, threatening to scorch the world. Zeus intervenes and throws a lightning bolt at the chariot. The horses are scared and the chariot disappears from sight, into the sky. Phaeton is fatally struck, falls from the chariot and dies.

Epilogue. In a pensive epilogue, Phoebus mourns his son, but eventually resumes his duties as driver of the solar chariot. The music fades out, and one last time the menacing sun chariot motif sounds.

Legend tells that one day a merchant from Scherpenheuvel was returning home in the evening. In a forest, he was ambushed by robbers. The merchant attacked the robbers and even wounded two of them, but as more robbers jumped out of the bushes, he decided to run for it. Near the village of Wiekevorst (a small town near Heist-op-den-Berg), he collapsed and he prayed to God to save him. After he finished praying, suddenly all the robbers had disappeared. When the merchant got up, he saw a statue of the Virgin Mary hanging from an opposite oak tree, and next to that tree there was a large sulfur pit. The merchant then went to the parish priest in Wiekevorst, told him the whole story and then later had the chapel built.

The work was commissioned by K.F. Onafhankelijkheid Wiekevorst as part of the alliance ‘Fanfarissimo’, a collaboration of nine leading fanfare bands. By joining forces, they want to give the repertoire for fanfare bands a quality boost.

Horses of the Camargue - Steven De Baecke

The inspiration came from a single rhythmic motif: the anapaest. (short, short, long).

The main theme is designed so that this rhythm repeatedly attracts attention. In the further development of the work, this rhythmic motif makes you think more and more of horses' hooves. The percussionists depict the trotting horses through the use of woodblocks and maracas.

This work won the 2022 VLAMO Composition Competition for the 3rd division, and in the spring of 2023 it was premiered by the Koninklijke Harmonie van Peer conducted by Kevin Houben.

On 14 September 2021, Luc Craps died of cancer at the age of 59. He was a true pacesetter, extremely funny when he could, serious when necessary. Some time after his death, Luc's wife Erika asked close friend Roger to write a work in lasting memory of Luc.

Luc, a gifted cornet player, was a musician from the band 'Bravoer' from the very beginning. He also co-founded Quatre Brass, a spin-off of Bravoer consisting of four musicians, including the composer of this work.

That is why the composition starts with a tender melody, performed by four soloists. Because the composer knew that Luc could be very moved by simple, melodic music, the work was therefore deliberately written in this style.

But all he got were severe wounds those made by the sailors who thought that he wanted to attack them. Nobody knows… that all he wants, is just only someone who just treat him like the others, not a beast.

With 'Stormseye', the composer describes the passing of a storm. The calm joyful opening by the cornets reflects the open blue sky. The weather very quickly turns as the music clearly becomes more and more chaotic. The storm gains momentum and the band also becomes more and more tempestuous. The solos in the flugelhorn, cornet and euphonium, among others, reflect a moment of tranquillity, with a growing anxiety about what is to come. The quietness of the eye of the storm before all hell breaks loose again. The music then builds to a grand finale that combines the opening theme with the storm's thematic material. The storm is overcome and the sky clears completely! 'Stormseye' was written as a test piece for the B division of the Vlaams Open Brassband Kampioenschap - VOBK 2024 in Mechelen (B).

Centennial Overture was written to the centennial of K.F. St. Cecilia from Deerlijk (B). The work opens with a short fanfare, representing the celebration of this centenarian. This is followed by a peaceful hymn in which the band can display all its warmth and colour. After a lively interlude, the hymn returns full of brilliance and energy, symbolising the vitality of the society.

Sparkle was voted 'runner up' of the international composition competition organised by 'The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain' in spring 2023.

The music begins with a rhythmic and rousing motif that reflects the excitement of take-off. Trumpets and trombones take the lead as the power of the rocket engines comes to life.

After ignition, the music turns into a fast-paced rousing melody that follows the rocket up into space. The repetitive motifs throughout the band reflect the dizzying speed at which the rocket approaches the atmosphere.

The slow movement paints a beautiful picture of our planet from outer space. The flugelhorn presents the main theme a first time before it will be led by the whole band to an apotheosis. The trumpets and trombones then announce the journey home with a resumption of the opening theme.

This begins at an equally dazzling speed, the excitement of the journey is increasingly intensified until it culminates in a triumphant finale with a spectacular ending reflecting the homecoming of the space voyagers.

"Ignition" is a thrilling opening piece that celebrates the power of human exploration. Let this musical journey stimulate your imagination.
