My vision on (food-) photography in four words … “Mouthwatering pictures” and “fingelickin’ good images”. My camera is deaf, can’t taste or smell and is even blind – until I lend my eye to it. But I taste and taste all the more. I express the emotions I feel in my images. Yet music from home was my first love. But unlike my cousins and uncles as lyricist/composer Gus Roan and musical phenomenon John Roan (Arsenal), my musical concoctions – despite five years of solfège and a lasting love for music – were not high-flyers. With the same passion but just a little more innate talent, then I made my profession out of another passion: light and colour and capturing that one moment.

In the meantime we are 30 years older, tens of thousands of photos, hundreds of restaurant visits and, yes – you have to take the blunder with the bump – also a lot of kilos further on. No regrets. On the contrary. More than ever I feel privileged. A Sunday child who could do his job as a photographer in 22 countries and for more than a thousand clients. A playbird who got the chance to work with numerous chefs and creatives from the front row.

Photography, architecture, interior design, fashion and – also – cooking give colour to my life more than ever and more brightly than ever before. Looks.be and foodfoto.be, among others, and the ‘feelgood newspaper’ Nie Neutenaar, are not so silent witnesses of this. What do you think, shall we have a chat? Rudy

Mijn visie op ( food-) fotografie in vier woorden …

‘Mouthwatering pictures’ en ‘fingelickin’ good images’.

Mijn fototoestel is doofstom, kan niet proeven of ruiken en is zelfs blind – tot ik er mijn oog aan leen. Maar ikzelf proef en smaak des te meer. De emoties die ik daar bij voel, druk ik, uit in m’n beelden.

Nochtans was muziek van huisuit m’n eerste liefde.

Maar anders dan bij neefjes en ooms als tekstschrijver/componist Gus Roan en muzikaal fenomeen John Roan (Arsenal), waren mijn muzikale brouwsels – ondanks vijf jaar notenleer en een blijvende liefde voor muziek – geen hoogvliegers.

Met dezelfde gedrevenheid maar net iets meer aangeboren talent, dan maar van een àndere passie m’n beroep gemaakt: licht en kleur en het vastleggen van dat éne moment.

Intussen zijn we 30 jaar, tienduizend foto’s, honderden restaurantbezoeken en, ja – je moet de bluts met de buil nemen – ook een pak kilo’s verder. Geen spijt. Integendeel. Ik voel me meer dan ooit geprivilegeerd. Een zondagskind dat in 22 landen en voor meer dan duizend klanten z’n job als fotograaf kon uitvoeren. Een speelvogel die de kans kreeg om vanop de eerste rij met tal van chefs en creatieven samen te werken.

Fotografie, architectuur, interieur, mode en – ook zélf – koken geven meer dan ooit, en féller dan ooit kleur aan m’n leven. Onder meer looks.be en foodfoto.be, en de ‘feelgood krant’ Nie Neutenaar, zijn daarvan de niet zo stille getuigen.

Wat denk je, zullen we eens babbelen?
