The need for this label was felt because of the too many existing productions compared to the current reality of the record market: the record companies do not follow anymore, because of the lack of means on the one hand, and on the other hand because of the imbalance between the productions and the rate of relea

In composing for his budding guitar trio, native Londoner Jack Gillen draws influence from the likes of Nick Drake, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and Frederic Chopin (as well as modern guitar heroes like Julian Lage and John Scofield), guided by a deeply introspective leaning and focus on emotional potency to create a cohesive musical whole.
Years of collaboration with bassist Phil Donnelly and drummer Darren Beckett (Aaron Parks, Madeleine Peyroux, Kurt Rosenwinkel) have forged an unquestionable musical chemistry, which brings an exciting energy and spontaneity to this idiosyncratic yet accessible music which can go between sensitive ballads, hard grooves and cathartic rocking out, all with Gillen's distinctive songwriter-esque approach to composing. The debut album ‘No Home But Here’ is set to be released Autumn 2024.

STEP BY RECORDS: Financer un Big Band n'est pas simple, on le sait. Comment cela se fait-il que ce groupe existe depuis si longtemps avec si peu de changements de musiciens?

JSBB: D'après nous, il est urgent justement de nos jours de garder le côté brut social d'un big band, afin que le jazz ne se perde pas en concepts et créations uniquement à partir de machines. La joie de se retrouver une fois par mois, et de communiquer au public étonné la fête et l'énergie électrisante qu'on trouvait dans les clubs de Harlem n'a pas de prix.
Faire partie d'une communauté créative est aussi un but en soi, et une récompense certaine pour les musiciens présents.

JSBB: Le début fut timide car nous avancions à tâtons quant à la direction à prendre. Finalement, les années d'expérience, collaborations internationales et voyages nous ont solidifié. Le changement de leadership il y a 7 ans a aussi donné un renouveau au groupe.

C’est le titre de la chanson titre de l’Album « Dans le Vieux Carré ». Le « Vieux Carré », c’est le French Quarter, le centre de New Orleans. C’est là où nous avons été enregistrer cet album et puiser toute l’inspiration qui anime la Krewe depuis 6 ans.

👤 LE KREWE DU BELGE C'EST:

Les “Krewes” -équipage en faux vieux anglais-, ce sont les compagnies de carnaval de La Nouvelle-Orléans. Le Krewe s'inspire de ce qui s’écoute aujourd’hui dans cette ville mythique. La particularité de Krewe du Belge, c'est le "Gumbo", le mélange. À la fois Trad et Funk et métissé à notre folklore belge. C'est un Brass Band festif et inclusif qui chante en français.

🔎 Pourquoi Palindrome?

Se dit d'un mot, d'un vers, d'une phrase que l'on peut lire indifféremment de gauche à droite ou de droite à gauche. Ce mot qui est le titre d'une composition du saxophoniste Daniel Stokart correspondait bien au concept de l'album, celui-ci ayant une ouverture et une finale traversées d'une note sans début ni fin: un do qui tend vers l'infini. On aimerait presque écouter notre album de droite à gauche !

👤 PORTRAIT D'ARTISTE

Incontournable de la scène nationale et internationale, le Jazz Station Big Band est devenu au fil des ans une partie intégrante du patrimoine bruxellois, véritable groupe mythique de vrais professionnels passionnés. Acclamé par la presse et reconnu par ses pairs, plusieurs albums sont sortis sur les labels Igloo, Hypnote Records, et bientôt sur Step By Records.

Soutenir une résidence mensuelle dans un club (la Jazz Station) pendant près de vingt ans ne s’était encore jamais vu en Belgique. Mais il n’y a pas que cela : de nombreux festivals et salles extérieures font appel au big band, qui en profite pour collaborer avec des invités exceptionnels. De Dinant à Dubaï, ils ont croisé le fer avec Kenny Werner, Grégoire Maret, Jason Rebello, Emil Viklicky, David Linx,…
Il semblerait même que le groupe, atteignant sa maturité artistique, ne serait qu’à la genèse de son histoire. En effet, leur son est à présent immédiatement identifiable, dû non seulement à l’alchimie unique entre des musiciens considérés comme la crème de la crème européenne, mais aussi grâce à la patte de leurs arrangeurs. Car ne vous méprenez pas : même si ce big band donne l’impression de légèreté à la belge, la sophistication et les émotions profondes sont toujours inhérentes à leur musique.
Infatigable, le Jazz Station Big Band n’a pas fini de faire parler de lui.

Stéphane Mercier's new album Syntropy will be out everywhere on November 15th with Nicola Andrioli (piano), Nicolas Thys (double bass), Dré Pallemaerts (drums). Belgian tour on January 2024! The album according to Stéphane Mercier : The story behind this recording is astonishing. It happened on a Sunday. We met at 10am at the Jet studio in Brussels. The set-up was the opposite of current trends: we placed ourselves very close together, without separations, and above all without headphones, forcing us to listen attentively and concentrate. We adjusted the sound fairly quickly so that we could quickly start recording the first takes. The pizzas were quickly ordered and comfortably eaten. We took the time to talk about a few things before resuming. All the tracks on this album were recorded between 2.30pm and 5pm, at which point we stopped the session, even though the studio was booked until 7pm. We didn't resort to editing, and mistakes were kept as they were (listen to Dré's drumsticks fall to the floor during the exchanges between the band and the drums on Blizz!) The first track, Fly, Fly, Rockets, was inspired by the up-tempo be-bop tunes of the day, but with a few harmonic twists. This is followed by a cover of one of the most beautiful ballads: Billie Preston's You Are So Beautiful, made popular by British singer Joe Cocker. Blizz next is a medium swing tune, also with a particular harmonic modulation, although the form is only eight bars long. Then comes Ipseity, opening with an impressionistic introduction by Nicola Andrioli. The rhythm section then moves into a solid slow tempo to welcome the flute. We emerge from the dream with the energetic Too Cool For School: a sort of Scofield/Eddie Harris boogaloo. Norma is a tribute to the shaman Norma Panduro Navarro, known for her icaro songs dictated by the ayahuasca (the Amazonian liana used to alter consciousness during ceremonies).
