Founded in 2005, Je m'en fish started out, and was founded for, doing a number of experimental 'open contests' and 'open stages' solely for musicians doing any and all kinds of electronic music, or using likewise apparel, in Belgium. Partnering with the likes of Poppunt and attracting a number of people in the jury such as Dirk Da Davo (The Neon Judgement), Kurt Overberg (Ancienne Belgique), a var
iety of people from radios like Studio Brussel etc., these ran for approximately 2 years, next to a number of other 'open stages', collaborations, and more. By that time, Je m'en fish won the 'Gouden Ketjes Voor Cultuur, Jeugd en Sport' of the Flemish community for Brussels (Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie) for a cheque of 5000 euro in a packed Ancienne Belgique from the hands of Pascal Smet (a minister here eh) and with it, it had shifted to doing a number of promotional compilation cd's and a DVD for a set number of artists. With more and more coproduction demands from some of the larger Belgian players (Bozar, Recyclart, VK* Concerts, Gentse Feesten, ...), Je m'en fish also aimed at bringing young, promising artists to Belgium and thus were the first to bring artists that by now are household names to Belgium such as James Blake or Mount Kimbie, while events to promote Belgian artists also followed including Paard Van Troje in Den Haag several times, Outlook Festival in Croatia a number of times, as well as a tour of Slovenia, Italy and more. A grasp of more main/headlining artists at coproductions or events at that time were among others 65daysofstatic, The Neon Judgement, Flux Pavilion, Mount Kimbie, James Blake, Modeselektor, T. At our own events, there was regularly a thematic evening around one label or organisation, such as Hotflush, Ninja Tune, Soul Motion nights, and more. Under the guise of 'Taking Back Mondays', we also took residence approx. once each month at Kultuurkaffee ('Pilar', these days) on the VUB campus, and brought together household names in d'n'b, dubstep, electro and more with young local beginning artists - Names like Legowelt, Scuba, Total Science & Murdock (For a live rendition for Studio Brussel radio), Chris Su, etc. An impromptu conclusion was aimed at and happened in 2017 with the event 'Doorstroom'. Working with 2 event locations located under a railway, Recyclart for Brussels and Ampere for Antwerp, and partnering up with our national railway company NMBS for a train between both, we brought artists over like Jazzanova, Ninja Tune's DJ Food and DJ Vadim feat. MC Inja and Lapalux, after which the association became dormant for a number of years (Hey, we're old :) )
Considering the ongoing crisis and reading more and more outcries of artists we have been working with or linked with before with concerning financial stability, no events, so no coverage etc., we decided to become active again and launch a number of new releases with a large selection of artists, starting out with artists that were either associated with us or we had at our events, and currently in 2021 testing the waters and looking for others. We currently had several audio tape releases (because hey, retro) and started with vinyl releases again by the latter half of 2021, as the last one was dating back to 2012. The main goal is to promote the featured artists, as well as support the few record shops we have left that sell them with a large portion of sales going to them as well. If it's electronic, accoustic, goth, d'n'b, if we like it, we'll push it.
