The 74th Berlin International Film Festival will open on February 15, 2024 with the world premiere of Small Things Like These, the Irish-Belgian production financed by Artists Equity and Screen Ireland. The cast of the literary adaptation, written by Enda Walsh, directed by Tim Mielants includes Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson. Small Things Like These will be screened in competition.
The film is based on the book by the award-winning Irish writer Claire Keegan and reunites director Mielants (‘WIL’, ‘PATRICK’, ‘The Responder’) with Murphy, who previously worked together on series three of Peaky Blinders.
Tim Mielants is incredibly delighted with this news:
“Small Things Like These has become a film that is very dear to me. The fact that I was able to make it with the winner of the Golden Globes in the lead role, and that it is also the opening film of the Berlin Film Festival, is unreal.”
The film was produced by Murphy and Alan Moloney through their company Big Things Films along with Catherine Magee. Matt Damon and Drew Vinton also produce for Artists Equity with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales. Additional finance came from Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann and the film was co-produced in Belgium by Wilder Content, in association with Umedia.
Wilder Content is the young production company of Tim Mielants and Bert Van Dael. They previously made the series Exes. Small Things Like These is their first international co-production.
