In Netrokona, floodwaters have started to recede, but the crisis is far from over. Many residents are still worried about how they will recover, with water destroying rice crops and causing severe food shortages. Over 100,000 people remain trapped, and rural roads are submerged, making it hard to find work or access aid. Around 25,000 hectares of crops are still underwater, with 232 schools closed.

Local authorities are working to provide relief, distributing dry food and rice, but more aid is desperately needed. Let’s come together to support the flood-affected people of Netrokona in these difficult times.

Two playful egretlets in Rangpur were spotted flapping their tiny wings in excitement as they awaited their mother's return with food! These great egret siblings, who share their nest in the treetops near the water, seem to have formed a close bond. Although sibling rivalry is common among birds like hawks and herons, with larger chicks sometimes outcompeting smaller ones, these two seem to be watching out for each other. Let’s hope their bond stays strong as they grow in their watery world!

Durga Puja Amidst Flood Challenges in Mymensingh, Sherpur, and Netrakona

Despite the recent flash floods and ongoing waterlogging in several parts of Mymensingh, Sherpur, and Netrakona, devotees are celebrating Durga Puja with unwavering faith and resilience. From Kalmakanda to Haluaghat, many mandaps remain submerged, yet the festive spirit persists.

"This situation was totally unexpected, but we are celebrating the biggest religious festival, braving natural calamities," shared Gauranga Chandra Saha, President of Bangladesh Puja Utjapon Parishad in Kalmakanda.

While floodwaters are receding, the challenges continue for many devotees in remote areas, with knee-deep water still blocking access to pandals. However, in the true spirit of Durga Puja, the festival of triumph over adversity continues.

Let's pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected by the floods. May Goddess Durga bless everyone with strength and hope during this difficult time.

Just returned from a thrilling birdwatching adventure in Sonadia Island with BirdingBD Tours! Although we initially didn’t spot many migratory birds, persistence paid off as we were able to witness the rare and beautiful 'Lesser Noddy'—a species recently added to Bangladesh’s bird list by renowned foreign ornithologists Gary Allport and Jan-Erik Nilsson. We also observed 19 other migratory species, including gulls and shorebirds, across various locations like Belekherdia and Kaladia. The migratory season has just begun, and we expect even more species to arrive by November. Nature’s wonders truly never disappoint!

Patuakhali River Conservation Initiative

The Patuakhali River, stretching 12 kilometres with a spiral flow, has long suffered from encroachment and pollution. The river, which connects with the Lohalia and Payra rivers, faces severe degradation due to construction along its banks and untreated waste from Patuakhali town. The pollution worsens at the confluence with the Lohalia River, leading to sand buildup and erosion that has affected homes and agricultural land.

In response, the District River Conservation Committee is taking action! A meeting held at the District Commissioner's office on Tuesday, led by Additional District Commissioner Md. Obaidur Rahman, announced plans to restore the Patuakhali River within two months. This will be the priority river in the district, with a work plan to be finalized by October 20. Local authorities are committed to preventing further pollution and safeguarding the river’s future.

Let's all support this crucial initiative for a cleaner, healthier river!

Time for a Change: Public Ownership of Water Services

The UN special rapporteur on the human right to clean water has strongly criticized the privatised English water system, calling for it to be returned to public ownership. Prof. Pedro Arrojo-Agudo highlighted how private companies prioritize shareholders over public service, resulting in poor transparency and service delivery. With over 90% of the world’s cities running water publicly, and examples like Paris demonstrating success, it’s clear the UK needs a fresh approach. Water is a human right, not a commodity!
