The Ice Stupa Project is a local engineering initiative aimed at bringing fresh water supplies to Himalayan villages. Ladakh, some 800 miles northwest of New Delhi, is 15,000 feet above sea level, where temperatures can drop to -22° F and average annual precipitation is just four inches. Humans have survived largely by diverting freshwater from glacial runoff. But less snowfall and irregular ice-melting have become almost permanent features in the region over recent years.

It’s claimed that fast fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world due to the amount of water and energy used, chemical run-off, and waste produced. Couple the environmental destruction with inherent human rights breaches, and it’s easy to see why fashion needs an overhaul.

Fashion is awash with harsh truths: floods of environmental impacts, an insatiable thirst for newness at odds with calls to produce less but better, and seasons that no longer serve current climate models.

Meanwhile, some communities are doubling down on their use of soil. Methods such as tilling leave soil bare to the elements and kill off the microbes that promote good soil health. Now, farmers are learning to farm while encouraging soil health. Increasing the water-holding capacity of soil increases its resilience to drought, allowing natural predator-prey ecosystems to thrive means pesticides can be eliminated, and looking after soil health increases its carbon sequestering ability.

One technological solution to climate change is vertical farming. In buildings with hyper-controlled environments, crops are stacked vertically in rows. Soil, water, and sunlight are replaced with nutrient mists that allow more reliable nutrient uptake into the roots, and LED light that mimics the Sun’s rays. This allows farms to control plant size, texture, and taste. For crops like salad greens, vertical farms beat fields on yield, but environmentally, the impact is substantial, as controlling the climate and using LED light is energy intensive.
