According to a report by UNICEF, named "Severe wasting: An overlooked child survival emergency", Bangladesh made it to the top 5 countries with the highest number of children suffering from severe malnutrition, in the Asian continent.
The report, stated that children suffer from numerous medical conditions, due to a lack of essential macronutrients and micronutrients in their diets.
The report further highlighted South Asia as the epicenter of malnutrition and proclaimed that: "the region is also home to high rates of underweight and anemia among adolescent girls and pregnant or breastfeeding women,” which directly affects the health of the babies born to these mothers, as child marriage rates are high within these countries. Hence, babies born to these mothers are more prone to succumb to the illnesses associated with malnutrition.
According to the list provided by the report, Bangladesh ranked 5th with 327,859 children suffering from severe malnutrition. This estimated number is followed by India which is ranked 1st, with 5,772,472 children affected, and Pakistan which made it to the 3rd rank, with an estimated number of 678,925 children affected with malnutrition.
The report states that, on a global scale, over 13.6 million children under the age of 5 suffer from severe malnutrition. Among this estimated number, 20% of the children affected in this age group die.
