The greatest Filipino of the past century bereaved us peacefully on December 16,2022 in Utrech, Netherlands.

Prof. Jose Ma. Sison, founding chair of the Communist Party of the Philippines, passed away at around 8:40 p.m. (Philippine time) after two weeks confinement in the hospital. He was 83.

The Filipino proletariat and toiling people grieve the death of their teacher and guiding light.

The entire Communist Party of the Philippines gives the highest possible tribute to its founding chairman, great Marxist-Leninist-Maoist thinker, patriot, internationalist and revolutionary leader.

Even as we mourn, we vow continue to give all our strength and determination to carry the revolution forward guided by the memory and teachings of the people's beloved Ka Joma.

Ayon sa ulat mula sa Uson Municipal Police Station, ang military service vehicle na sinasakyan ng mga sundalo ay galing sa Brgy. Baclay, Milagros, Masbate at patungo sana sa kanilang detachment sa Brgy. Paguimahan sa nasabi ng bayan nang biglang pumutok ang gulong nito na siyang naging dahilan ng paggulong gulong at tuluyang pagbangga nito sa isang cement mixer truck na nakaparada sa sa naturang lugar.

VHONG NAVARRO SURRENDERS TO NBI

Actor Vhong Navarro, on September 19, 2022, surrendered to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after a Warrant of Arrest was issued against him.

Through his legal counsel, Vhong Navarro coordinated with the NBI expressing his intent to voluntarily surrender in relation to the Warrant of Arrest issued against him for Acts of Lasciviousness by the Metropolitan Trial Court (MTC) Branch 116, Taguig City on September 15, 2022. The bail for the said case was fixed at Php 36,000.00.

In the morning of September 19, 2022, the actor, together with his counsels appeared before the NBI, Vtech Tower, G. Araneta Avenue, Quezon City to voluntarily submit himself to the custody of the NBI. He was thereafter processed as per the Bureau’s standard operating procedure.

In the afternoon of the same day, another Warrant of Arrest for R**e, with no bail recommended, was issued against Vhong Navarro by the Regional Trial Court Branch 69, Taguig City.

Accordingly, he was subjected to antigen test where he tested negative and was turned over to NBI-Security and Management Section (NBI-SMS) today, September 20, 2022 for detention.

Facts of the case:

A 61 year old accused has been in jail for more than three years. In 2016, he was accused of stealing the lunch of a 14 year old student called "bentelog" (sinangag at itlog worth PhP 20.) Since the victim is a minor, the case of theft was filed in a Regional Trial Court (RTC). The bail was set for PhP 2,000. 00, which the accused was not able to provide.

The RTC transferred the case to the Metropolitan Trial Court.

(Edit: A separate case of theft was filed in the MTC, this time the tindera as the complainant).

The MTC conducted hearings, and after three hearings postponed, the MTC judge provisionally dismissed the case. The MTC judge immediately ordered the warden to release the inmate.

However, the MTC judge never informed the RTC judge on how the case was disposed. And the RTC judge never sent a release order to the warden. And since, it was the RTC judge who committed the inmate, without this release order, the inmate stayed in jail.

In jail, he had a stroke. The good thing, he was taken cared of by this cell mates.

Upon notice of his prolonged detention, the paralegal of the jail immediately informed the RTC court. The RTC personnel were shocked. The RTC judge immediately sent the release order. The inmate was released a week after.

(Edit: Upon verification of the BJMP paralegal officer, it was discovered that the RTC already disposed the case three years ago and the judge sentenced the accused for 10 days).

He stayed in jail for three years waiting for the release order. The government spent Php 70 for food and Php 5 for medicine per day for three years totalling PhP 82,125.00. Again, he stole PHp 20 and the bail is PhP 2,000. He lost his family in process and now probably live in the streets.

Why do these things happen?
What can be done to avoid such cases?
Is there any sensible alternative to trial detention for poor inmates?
