আল-বিরুনি (প্রায় 1,000 বছর আগে) আজকের স্বীকৃত মানের তুলনায় 99.7% নির্ভুলতার সাথে পৃথিবীর🌍 পরিধি পরিমাপ📏📐 করেছিলেন।
আল-বিরুনি ছিলেন একজন পারস্য পলিম্যাথ যিনি ৯৭৩ থেকে ১০৪৮ সাল পর্যন্ত বেঁচে ছিলেন। তিনি জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞান, গণিত, ভূগোল, পদার্থবিজ্ঞান এবং ইতিহাস সহ অনেক ক্ষেত্রের পণ্ডিত ছিলেন।
১০৩০ সালে আল-বিরুনি পৃথিবীর পরিধি পরিমাপের জন্য ত্রিকোণমিতি ব্যবহার করেন। তার অনুমান ছিল 6339.6 কিলোমিটার, যা 6378.1 কিলোমিটারের আধুনিক স্বীকৃত মূল্যের 0.3% এর মধ্যে।
আল-বিরুনির পদ্ধতিটি এই নীতির উপর ভিত্তি করে তৈরি হয়েছিল যে পৃথিবীর বক্রতার কারণে দিগন্তটি সমুদ্রপৃষ্ঠের চেয়ে পাহাড়ের চূড়া থেকে নীচে প্রদর্শিত হয়। তিনি দিগন্ত এবং একটি প্লাম্ব লাইনের মধ্যবর্তী কোণটি দুটি ভিন্ন স্থানে পরিমাপ করেছিলেন এবং এই তথ্যটি পৃথিবীর ব্যাসার্ধ গণনা করতে ব্যবহার করেছিলেন।
আল-বিরুনির পৃথিবীর পরিধি পরিমাপ ছিল তার সময়ের অন্যতম সঠিক পরিমাপ। সপ্তদশ শতাব্দীর আগ পর্যন্ত এটি অতিক্রম করা যায়নি, যখন ফরাসি গণিতবিদ এবং জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানী জিন পিকার্ড পৃথিবীর পরিধি পরিমাপের জন্য আরও সুনির্দিষ্ট পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করেছিলেন।
