১৯৭১ সালের ৭ ই মার্চ ঐতিহাসিক রেসকোর্স ময়দানে বঙ্গবন্ধু ১০ লক্ষাধিক লোকের সামনে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব ওই দিন বজ্রকণ্ঠে ঘোষণা করেন- ‘এবারের সংগ্রাম আমাদের মুক্তির সংগ্রাম, এবারের সংগ্রাম স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রাম।’ বঙ্গবন্ধুর এই ভাষণকে 'মেমোরি অব দা ওয়ার্ল্ড ইন্টারন্যাশনাল রেজিস্টারে' অন্তর্ভুক্ত করে ইউনেস্কো।
