The leaders and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement have been holding a protest march in Jessore against the Awami League's announced program since February.
On Thursday (January 30) afternoon, they started from in front of the city's Circuit House, circled the main roads of the city and ended with a short rally in front of the Press Club. In the protest march, the students shouted slogans such as 'Awami League's address, this will not happen in Bengal', 'Fascism's address, this will not happen in Bengal !

Titumir students protest over university issues
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইস্যুতে তিতুমীর শিক্ষার্থীদের বিক্ষোভ আন্দোলন

The students' hunger strike demanding state recognition of the capital's government Titumir College as an independent university has entered its fifth day. On Sunday (February 2), around 12 noon, the students blocked two roads in front of Mohakhali Titumir College with bamboo.

The students' 7-point demands are-

1. Titumir University should be recognized by the state and the university's academic calendar should be published.

2. Titumir University administration should be formed and admission activities for the 2024-2025 session should be conducted.

3. Ensure 100% accommodation for students or else 100% of the students' accommodation expenses should be borne immediately.

4. At least two international standard subjects 'Law' and 'Journalism' should be added from the 2024-2025 academic year.

5. Qualified PhD-holding teachers should be appointed to conduct academic activities.

6. The number of seats should be limited to increase the quality of education by 100%.

7. Land and financial allocation must be ensured to build international standard research laboratories.

Arrest warrant issued against Evaly's Rasel and Shamima

A court has sentenced Mohammad Rassel, the managing director (MD) of
e-commerce company Evaly, and his wife, chairman Shamima Nasrin, to two years in prison each for fraud. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra gave the verdict on Wednesday (January 29). In addition to the sentence, they have been fined Tk 10,000 each and sentenced to two months in prison in default. The court has also issued arrest warrants and sentencing warrants against the accused as they are absconding. The plaintiff's lawyer Tausif Mahmud gave this information. It is learned that various products were sold through a website named Evaly.com and page with eye-catching advertisements. Attracted by this, Taufiq Mahmud ordered a Yamaha R15 bike from their company on March 20, 2021. He paid Tk 245,000 for it.

956 immigrants arrested in USA

Security forces have launched a surprise operation to expel illegal immigrants from the United States. The operation began on Sunday local time under the orders of President Donald Trump's new administration. Various US federal agencies have participated in the operation. So far, about 1,000 people have been arrested across the country. The US federal law enforcement agency Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reported this information. In addition to ICE, members of the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and various Justice Department agencies have participated in the operation that began on Sunday. The operation is expected to last for a week.

Train services open after 30 hours

Train suspended, passengers suffer

Protests and clashes between DU vs seven college students at night

There have been sporadic clashes between Dhaka University (DU) and its seven affiliated colleges. The clashes between students took place from 11pm to midnight on Sunday (January 26).
It is learnt that when students from seven colleges went to discuss five demands with the DU Pro-VC on Sunday evening, the protesters alleged that he had 'misbehaved'.
They blocked the Science Laboratory intersection around 6pm on such allegations. At that time, the students of the seven colleges set a deadline for Pro-VC Dr. Mamun Ahmed to apologize.

Seeing those news made me dizzy. I could not sleep for a few days. Then a big change came in me. I decided that I could not stay in this country. I have to leave. Then I took a few attempts. It seemed that if I could leave by plane. I also thought about going through Sialkot. After trying in various ways, one day I was able to cross the border by jeep and come to India.

In the face of widespread criticism and demands from various quarters across the country, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has re-determined the VAT, supplementary duty and excise duty rates for several sectors of goods and services.

According to the notification, VAT has been withdrawn from four sectors: medicines, mobile phone and ISP services, restaurants, motor vehicle garages and workshops.

In the case of the pharmaceutical industry, the notification mentions that in order to make medical services more accessible to all sections of the population, the increased VAT rate at the business level on the pharmaceutical industry has been completely withdrawn and the previous rate of 2.4% has been maintained.

Sarjis resigns from July Shaheed Memorial Foundation

Sarjis Alam, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement and the main organizer of the National Citizen Committee, has stepped down from the position of General Secretary of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation. Sarjis wrote in the post, "I am not the General Secretary of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation." To accelerate the pace of this foundation, changes have been made to the constitution, structure and working process of the foundation. From now on, the 'Executive Committee' will be responsible for managing the overall affairs of the entire office. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will serve as the head of the office there. Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdh is currently serving as the CEO.
