"The Waste Land" This poem written by the American-born British writer TS Eliot (1888-1965) is not only a treasure of English literature but also of world literature.
It covers language, religion, references to ancient poetry, books, plays, operas and music, passages of eloquent speeches, and even everyday life conversations. Especially after the horrors of World War I, the poem details how helpless people felt in a rapidly changing world of shattered empires and realities. The poem earned Eliot the reputation of a difficult poet. It also establishes a deep connection with the reader.
This poem is one of the most important literary works of the 20th century. And that is not only in terms of poetry or literary quality. Rather, its tone, its grammar, its associations and its tension have woven an important thread of modern thought and helped illuminate our contemporary world. The Waste Land is not only the greatest modern poem. At the same time, it is a sad poem written about the influence of modernism. Because, it has highlighted the degradation of morals as a result of the degradation of human religious beliefs and culture.
