গতকালকে দুপুর ১২ টা নাগাদ, ফরকাস্টের ফাউন্ডার আরিয়া মৃদুল (২৪) নিজ বাসা (আজমপুর কাঁচাবাজার রেলগেইট, উত্তরা) থেকে বের হয়েছিলো। তারপর দুপুর ১ টা থেকে তার ফোন বন্ধ এবং প্রায় ৩৩ ঘন্টা যাবত সে বাড়িতে ফেরত যায় নি এবং তাকে কোথাও খুজে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না। কেউ যদি দেখে থাকেন তাহলে এই নাম্বার- 01794239213 এ জানালে অনেক উপকার হবে।

উত্তরপত্রে “মন ভালো নেই” কথাটি লিখে বিপাকে পড়েছেন জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এক শিক্ষার্থী।

ওই শিক্ষার্থীকে বিভাগীয় তদন্তের জন্য ডাকা হয়েছে

বৃহস্পতিবার (২৩ জুন) বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইংরেজি বিভাগের প্রথম সেমিস্টারের এক শিক্ষার্থীর ওই অতিরিক্ত উত্তরপত্রের প্রথম পৃষ্ঠার ছবি ফেসবুকে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে।

এর উত্তর লেখার অংশে “স্যার আজকে আমার মন ভালো নেই" লেখা রয়েছে।

জানা গেছে, ছড়িয়ে পড়া খাতাটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে কোনো পরীক্ষার অংশ নয়। ওই শিক্ষার্থী কোনোভাবে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নির্ধারিত উত্তরপত্র সংগ্রহ করে এমনটি করেছেন।

তবে, উত্তরপত্রটি বাম পাশে লাল কালিতে শূন্য নম্বর দিয়ে “বাতিল” লিখে দেওয়া হয়েছে।

ফেসবুকে ছড়িয়ে পড়া এ ছবি শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে সমালোচনা ও হাস্যরস সৃষ্টি করলে ব্যবস্থা নেয় প্রশাসন।

এ বিষয়ে ওই শিক্ষার্থী অনলাইন সংবাদমাধ্যম বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে বলেন, “মজা করে করা এই ঘটনা যে এতদূর যাবে, তা আমি ভাবতে পারেননি।”

তিনি আরও বলেন, “একটা অতিরিক্ত কাগজে মজা করে লিখেছিলাম। কিন্তু এতটা ছড়িয়ে পড়বে, আমি ভাবিনি৷ স্যাররাও ডেকেছেন আমাকে এ নিয়ে। আমি ক্ষমা চেয়েছি, কী হবে বুঝতেছি না।”

এদিকে, এ ঘটনার জন্য শিক্ষকদের কাছে ওই শিক্ষার্থী ভুল স্বীকার করে নেন বলে জানিয়েছেন ইংরেজি বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান অধ্যাপক মমিন উদ্দীন।

তিনি বলেন, “এই শিক্ষার্থী অতিরিক্ত উত্তরপত্রটি কীভাবে সংগ্রহ করেছে, তা তারা জানার চেষ্টা করছেন। বিষয়টি আমাদের নজরে এসেছে, তার সাথে কথাও হয়েছে। তাকে আমরা রবিবার ডেকেছি। তারপর এ নিয়ে সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হবে।”

A fire service unit arrived at the scene to put out the blaze. They then tried to control the fire for about twenty minutes.

Over the last couple of months, various sections of society called upon the government to raise the tax-free income limit amid the rising cost of living.

Their argument is an upward revision of the ceiling will protect the buying capacity of low-income people to some extent from spiralling inflation and prevent erosion of their living standard.

The demand, as it seems from the proposed tax measures for the next fiscal year, remains unmet with the tax-free income limit staying unchanged for another year.

This means a person with a monthly income of more than Tk 25,000 will have to pay tax even if he or she cannot afford basic commodities to lead a decent life.

The initial tax rate and corresponding slabs of income are to remain unchanged.

But the limit of eligible investment for an individual has been reduced as the National Board of Revenue seeks to cut it to 20 percent from 25 percent of a taxpayer's total income.

It wants to do away with the slabs and introduce a uniform rate of 20 percent for eligible investment and a uniform rate of 15 percent in case of tax credit.

According to NBR officials, there were claims that too many slabs on tax rebates create complexity in tax credit calculation, prompting the tax authority to bring uniformity to the rate of tax rebates.

In the outgoing fiscal year, an individual taxpayer, who earned up to Tk 15 lakh a year, could get 15 percent tax credit on the amount of eligible investment which is 25 percent of the taxpayer's total income. The tax credit rate was the same for an individual earning up to Tk 15 lakh.

In the next fiscal year, the tax credit rate for individuals with annual income of above Tk 15 lakh is going to increase to 15 percent from 10 percent.

Based on the changes, the amount of overall rebate will decline, increasing tax burden mainly on the middle-income taxpayers.

For example, a taxpayer who earned Tk 6 lakh a year was entitled to a tax credit of Tk 22,500 in the outgoing fiscal year.

According to the changes proposed by the NBR, the tax credit will fall to Tk 18,000. This will increase tax burden on the taxpayer, leaving him or her with less money to pay for food, education, healthcare and other necessities after tax payment.

Coffee prices will likely increase with the finance minister proposing a 20% supplementary duty on processed and ready-to-consume coffee.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal made the announcement while reading out the proposals for the 2022-2023 fiscal year in parliament on Thursday.

He said: “The total tax incidence on raw roasted coffee is 89.32%, but the total tax incidence of processed and ready-to-consume coffee is 58.6%.

“In the interest of revenue protection, I am proposing to impose a 20% supplementary duty on processed and ready-to-consume coffee at the import stage.”

A leading commercial vehicle company's insight reveals that the industry expects to sell nearly 700 large buses this year alone, to new and existing fleet owners, targeting several dozen direct highway routes between the capital and the south-western Bangladesh connected by the Padma Bridge.

Police have recovered the dead body of a television producer from a roadside opposite the Police Plaza in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel.

The deceased, Abdul Bari, 29, was working as a senior production executive at private television channel DBC News.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Nazmul Hassan Feroze confirmed the matter to the media.

He was killed around seven to eight hours ago, says police.

According to DBC News, the murder is likely due to pre-existing enmity.

Police have recovered the knife used to kill him but are yet to make an arrest, reports DBC.

ADC Hssan told DBC that passersby called the police when they saw the body laying by the lake.

"It is being suspected that the attackers stabbed him," he said, adding that Bari went down to the lake to save himself.

When he came up, they slit his throat and left his belonging including the knife, moneybag and mobile phone at the scene, said ADC Hassan.

His body has been sent to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

BNP’s standing committee has blamed the government’s negligence and incapability for the deadly fire at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda.

“Our meeting thinks the government's negligence, lack of coordination and incompetence are responsible for the horrific accident at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on the outcomes of a virtual meeting of BNP standing committee members held on Monday night, he also said all-pervasive corruption, lack of accountability and incapability of the government have resulted in so many deaths and colossal damage.
