BOSS: We're returning to the office 5 days a week!
Employee: But I can't afford a car and a babysitter.

BOSS: 5 days a week at the office. Non-negotiable.
Employee: But I was hired as a fully-remote employee and I can't afford to buy a car or pay for daycare with my current salary.

BOSS: The firm has made its decision, if you want to stay with the company I'll see you Monday at the office.

---5 weeks later---

Employee: Here's my 2-week notice. I have found a fully remote job that does not require me to commute. Even though it's a smaller company, they treat me like I deserve to be treated.

BOSS: No wait, you're our top employee we can figure something out.

Employee: Too late.

So many companies are enforcing "Return to Office" policies with the justification that it increases "teamwork and collaboration." In reality, the employees are sitting on Zoom calls next to each other.

You can't enforce culture. Treat your employees as humans first and ask what they need. The culture can only be built after that.
