Tech billionaire Elon Musk agreed to make Starlink internet service in Gaza subject to Israeli approval during a visit to the country Monday, according to Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi.

As a result of this significant agreement, Starlink satellite units can only be operated in Israel with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications, including the Gaza Strip," Karhi wrote in a post on Musk's X messaging platform.

At the end of October, Musk said he wanted to use his company SpaceX's satellite communication system to help restore communications for internationally recognized aid organizations in the Gaza Strip.

Communications had been cut during the course of Israel's war on Gaza, which broke out after the Oct. 7 Hamas incursion.

Following Musk's offer, Israel said it would prevent the restoration of communications by Starlink by any means necessary, arguing that Hamas may use the system for military purposes.

During his trip to Israel, Musk is also set to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Herzog's office late Sunday said that representatives of the families of hostages abducted in the Gaza Strip would also be present at the meeting.

It was unclear whether Musk would meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hundreds of Thais trapped by clashes in northern Myanmar being evacuated

Over 200 Thai nationals caught in the crossfire of clashes between soldiers and armed ethnic-minority groups in northern Myanmar are being rescued and flown back to Thailand, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

Myanmar’s military, which took power in a 2021 coup, is battling armed resistance from an alliance of three ethnic-minority groups and pro-democracy fighters. The fighting is especially intense in the country’s north, with armed fighters taking over key towns near the Chinese border and blocking trade routes.

The Israeli military says 11 hostages have been released by the Palestinian armed group Hamas and are on their way to Israel, the latest in a series of exchanges during a four-day humanitarian pause.

“Based on information that was received from the Red Cross, 11 hostages are currently on their way to Israeli territory,” the Israeli military said in a statement on Monday.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, which has played a key role in mediation efforts, said those released were six Argentinians, three French citizens and two Germans.

The release of the hostages, some of the roughly 240 people taken captive by Hamas in deadly attacks on southern Israel on October 7, comes after Qatar and Hamas said that an agreement has been reached to further extend the initial four-day truce.

A passenger was fined $1,995 after she brought a chicken sandwich into Australia.

A New Zealand woman traveling to Australia was fined for entering the country with a chicken sandwich, The New Zealand Herald reported on Tuesday.

June Armstrong, 77, flew from Christchurch on the east coast of New Zealand to Brisbane Airport in northeastern Australia on May 2, per the report. She was fined 3,300 New Zealand dollars, or $1,995, for bringing an uneaten sandwich into Australia.

A border patrol staff later advised Armstrong to appeal the fine, per NZH. But when she tried appealing the fine, she only received automatic replies, per the report.

She said Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry only commented on the incident some six months later, after NZH reached out on behalf of Armstrong, per the report.

Armstrong said she packed the sandwich in her bag before the flight and, while she declared her prescription medication to authorities, forgot about the sandwich, per the report.

Three boats filled with more than 500 Rohingya refugees landed in Indonesia's westernmost province on Sunday (Nov 19), a UN agency said, in one of the biggest arrivals since Myanmar launched a military crackdown on the minority group in 2017.

The mostly Muslim Rohingya are heavily persecuted in Myanmar, and thousands risk their lives each year on long and expensive sea journeys, often in flimsy boats, to try to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.

United Nations refugee agency protection associate Faisal Rahman told AFP one boat had arrived in Aceh province's Bireuen district with 256 people aboard, while at least 241 others arrived in Aceh's Pidie region and a smaller boat carrying 36 arrived in East Aceh.

"They were found in several spots," Rahman said on Sunday.

Of the 256 aboard the Bireuen boat, 110 were women and 60 were children, he said.

It was the same boat that locals had pushed back out to sea on Thursday, leaving it stranded off the coast for several days, according to Rahman.

"It's confirmed... because many people were identified by security officials during the landing," he said.

The latest arrivals mean more than 800 refugees have landed in Aceh province this week alone, after 196 arrived on Tuesday and 147 on Wednesday, according to local officials.

An AFP journalist saw the Rohingya boat docked on the beach in Bireuen after the refugees had disembarked.

The refugees were being held at a temporary shelter while awaiting a decision from authorities on their fate, and were mostly in good health.

Bireuen regional secretary Ibrahim Ahmad told reporters Sunday the refugees' cases would be handled by other institutions, without elaborating.

In Pidie, Marfian, a spokesperson for the local fishing community who like many Indonesians goes by one name, confirmed to AFP that a boat of nearly 250 refugees landed overnight.

One of them, 20-year-old Aziz Ullah, said he was living in a camp in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh before the group started their journey 16 days ago.

"The (reason) behind our journey was that... the Myanmar government committed violence (against us) again and again," he told AFP.

"I just want a peaceful life, anywhere. If I will get a peaceful life here, I will stay here."

But Hasan Basri, another leader of the fishing community in Pidie, told reporters they would reject Rohingya people, claiming refugees had committed crimes in the area in the past.

Those who arrived in the Pidie region landed at around 3:00am local time (2000 GMT Saturday) and walked into the nearest village of Kulee from the coast without the knowledge of locals, said Basri.

"They already arrived and it is our obligation as humans to give them food and drinks," he said.

"Our reason to reject them is because the attitude and character of the refugees are not in line with the Aceh people. Their conduct is very distressing, this is what we really don't like."

During this week's arrivals, some Rohingya aboard one vessel made a desperate dash for shore after residents refused to let them land. They collapsed to the sand and begged for their exhausted fellow passengers to be allowed to disembark.

Chris Lewa, director of Rohingya rights organisation the Arakan Project, said it was the "beginning of the sailing season" for boats from Bangladesh across to Indonesia, which is often used as a transit point to Malaysia where many Rohingya refugees settle.

A 2020 investigation by AFP revealed a multimillion-dollar, constantly evolving people-smuggling operation stretching from a massive refugee camp in Bangladesh to Indonesia and Malaysia, in which members of the stateless Rohingya community play a key role in trafficking their own people.

More than 2,000 Rohingya are believed to have attempted the risky journey to other Southeast Asian countries in 2022, according to UNHCR.

Nearly 200 Rohingya died or went missing last year while attempting hazardous sea crossings, the agency has estimated. - AFP

Rohingya refugees reach western Indonesia on decrepit boat

About 250 desperate Rohingya refugees are afloat in the Andaman Sea after their attempt to land in Indonesia was rejected.

Their decrepit, overcrowded wooden boat reached western Indonesia on Thursday. However, after two other boats carrying about 350 refugees had docked in the northern region of Aceh earlier in the week, they were prevented from landing.

The third boat was met with resistance from locals in Bireuen, who refused to allow it to land and pushed the vessel back out to sea.

More than 2,000 Rohingya are believed to have attempted the risky journey to Southeast Asian countries in 2022.

16/11/2023

US President Joe Biden has said he had made it clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that occupying Gaza would be “a big mistake” and that the two-state solution was the only way to bring an end to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

“I made it clear to the Israelis I think it’s a big mistake for them to think they’re going to occupy Gaza and maintain Gaza,” Biden told a news conference in San Francisco. “I don’t think that works.”

Netanyahu said earlier this month that after the war Gaza would have to be “demilitarised, deradicalised and rebuilt” and that Israel would need to find a “civilian government” to govern the enclave, which has been run by Hamas since 2006.

The Israeli leader said there was no plan to “occupy” Gaza although many consider it an occupied territory already because Israel has full control of its borders, airspace and territorial waters despite having formally withdrawn its forces and settlers in 2005.

Speaking as the Israeli military continued its raid on Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital, Biden said he had also discussed with Israeli leaders the need to “be incredibly careful” in its actions at the hospital, under which Israel says the Palestinian armed group Hamas had built its military headquarters.

Hospital officials and Hamas, which controls Gaza, deny the claim.

More than 11,300 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began bombarding the besieged enclave on October 7 after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel killing about 1,200 people and taking more than 200 captive.

Biden, who was speaking to the media after a four-hour summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, insisted the only way to end the bloodshed was the “two-state solution”, with Israel and Palestinians living side by side.

France’s Macron urges Israel to stop bombing and killing civilians in Gaza

The French president said he hopes other leaders, including those in Washington, will join him in his call for a ceasefire.

Israel must stop bombing Gaza and killing civilians, French President Emmanuel Macron has told British media.

There was “no justification” for the bombing, Macron told the BBC in an interview published late on Friday, adding that a ceasefire would benefit Israel.

He said France “clearly condemns” the “terrorist” actions of Hamas, but that while recognising Israel’s right to protect itself, “we do urge them to stop this bombing” in Gaza.

“I hope they will,” the French president said when asked if he wanted other leaders – including in the United States and Britain – to join his calls for a ceasefire.

Washington has refused to support calls for a full ceasefire, instead backing short stops in fighting to allow humanitarian aid.

Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, which killed 1,200 people. The intense bombings and ground assaults by Israel have since killed more than 11,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

Tel Aviv has faced growing calls for restraint, but has said Hamas would take advantage of a ceasefire to bolster its positions.

In a statement responding to Macron’s comments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that world leaders should be condemning Hamas, and not Israel.
