Did you know? “Xmas” comes from Greek, not from removing Christ from Christmas.

Here’s the origin in a clear, historical way:

The “X” in Xmas comes from the Greek letter Chi (Χ)

Chi is the first letter of “Christos” (Χριστός), the Greek word for Christ

Early Christians often used Χ as a sacred abbreviation for Christ

Historical use

Xmas has been used since at least the 16th century

It appears in religious manuscripts and early English writings

It was commonly used as a written shorthand, especially when space or ink was limited

Important note

Xmas does NOT mean “without Christ”

It was originally a reverent abbreviation, not a secular one

Fun historical detail

Early Christian symbols like ☧ (Chi-Rho) were based on the same Greek letters

Monks and scribes frequently used abbreviations like this in religious texts

So while some people today avoid “Xmas” for personal or religious reasons, historically it honors Christ rather than excludes Him.
