In our inaugural issue, Edib Smolo explores the complex relationship between finance, institutions, and economic growth in the European Union and European transition economies from 2002 to 2019. Contrary to the widely held belief that finance positively impacts growth, Smolo's research reveals that finance either has a negative impact or is insignificant, with no evidence of non-linearity. Additionally, the study finds that institutions do not play a role in growth, either directly or indirectly via finance. These findings highlight the varying effects of financial and institutional development across different countries.
