Donald Trump 'not ready' to recognize Somaliland's independence

Despite previous talks, US President Donald Trump is reportedly, "not ready" to embrace Somaliland's independence and was reportedly "unimpressed" by its expressed interest in joining the Abraham Accords, Report informs via Fox News.

Israel has officially become the first country to formally recognize Somaliland, which declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 but until now had failed to be recognized by any UN member states, as an independent nation, marking a significant diplomatic development for the coastal territory in Africa.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decision Friday, December 26, along with Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and the president of the Republic of Somaliland.

Israel and Somaliland signed a mutual declaration "in the spirit of the Abraham Accords," which were brokered by President Trump.

Trump told the New York Post he has to "study" Netanyahu's pitch and asked from his golf course, "Does anyone know what Somaliland is, really?"

"We"ll study it. I study a lot of things and always make great decisions, and they turn out to be correct," Trump told the Post.

Alcohol is responsible for one in three deaths from injury and violence in the WHO European Region, posing a major threat to public health, particularly during holiday periods when consumption typically rises, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, Report informs via Anadolu.

According to a new factsheet by WHO/Europe based on 2019 data, nearly 145,000 injury-related deaths in the region were attributable to alcohol, including self-harm, road traffic injuries, and falls.

"No other psychoactive substance contributes so heavily to both unintentional and intentional injuries," the agency said, warning that alcohol remains a particularly dangerous risk factor for young people.

WHO/Europe said the region has the highest alcohol consumption levels globally, with alcohol use causing an estimated 800,000 deaths each year, around one in every 11 deaths.

"Alcohol is a toxic substance that impairs judgment, slows reaction times and promotes risk-taking behavior," said Carina Ferreira-Borges, WHO/Europe's regional adviser for alcohol, illicit drugs and prison health, adding that many alcohol-related injuries are preventable.

❗️Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate 72-hour ceasefire along their shared border to halt three weeks of fighting that left dozens dead and many others injured, official said on Saturday, Report informs via Anadolu.

The agreement was announced in a joint statement issued after a meeting of the 3rd Special General Border Committee (GBC), a body co-chaired by the defense ministers of both Southeast Asian countries, according to the Cambodian Prime Minister's office.

The ceasefire will take effect on Saturday starting at noon local time (0500GMT).

Under the arrangement, both sides commit to halting all armed hostilities and pledge to avoid unprovoked fire, troop advances, or movements toward each other"s positions.

The ceasefire applies across all areas along the border and covers military targets, civilians, and infrastructure, the statement said.

Around 99 people have been killed over the past 20 days since clashes resumed on December 8, a day after a border skirmish wounded two Thai soldiers.

In total, 26 Thai soldiers and a civilian were killed in the fighting. Additionally, 41 other civilians died due to "collateral effects" amid the border clashes, according to Thai authorities.

Cambodia's Interior Ministry said 31 Cambodian civilians were killed.

Nearly 1 million people have been displaced on both sides since the renewed clashes began.

Thailand and Cambodia have a long-running border dispute that has repeatedly erupted into violence, including clashes in July in which at least 48 people were killed.
