Along with launching Futures on Saturday, we also announced the winners of the Futures prizes. We loved all the stories in the collection so much that it was so difficult to choose just 3 favourites. So we decided to break the rules and award an additional 3 Highly Commended stories. You can read all about the winners and highly commended authors here, and don't forget to pick up your copy of Futures now (free postage on the GP website, or go see your local bookseller!).

UncategorisedFuturesby Lynette Washingtonupdated on 4 August 20244 August 2024 On Saturday 3 August, we launched Futures into the world. It was wonderful to share this special book with all the friends and supporters in the audience. Thank you to Kristin Martin for launching the book so beautifully!...

Hi ag*in friends
Just a reminder for those who haven't RSVP'ed that the launch of Futures is happening at the Wheaty this Saturday at 3pm.
Am really looking forward to sharing this amazing collection with you, and announcing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners (plus I'll be sneaking in a Highly Commended or two, because it's just that good!).

Thank you to the many wonderful writers who have submitted their work to us over the last six months, both for FUTURES and general submissions.

We will continue to read those submissions over the next couple of months and will respond to each writer as soon as possible. We are a small team, and it will take some time to get back to everyone, so please be patient. If your work has been with us for longer than 3 months and you'd like an update, feel free to get in touch.

We have made the difficult decision to close submissions for the time being to allow us to give those submissions the time they deserve. Please do not send your work at this time. We look forward to opening submissions ag*in soon and will let you know when that happens.

Keep writing!

"The Miscreants is one of those books that creeps back into your mind long after you’ve closed it, so great is the power of the story contained within its pages. Christopher Hawkes’ debut novel somehow embraces the wide unknown of the world and at the same time the minute details that come to define the lives of his characters...The Miscreants is a beautiful book, full of the raw, basic sense of what it is to be human and in pain. It is dark in places and light in others. It is a story of two boys that is part coming-of-age and part mystery as they seek to find whatever part of them was lost when their mother died. It’s haunting and wonderful, and should be savoured, page by page, word by word."
Thank you Jen Bowden and The Westerly for getting this book and for your thoughtful review.

Well, I heartily agree Tom Di Santo! Thanks for this recommendation for The Miscreants.
"A friend of mine has recently published The Miscreants, by Christopher Hawkes. It is an engaging novel about beliefs, destiny, relationships and what constitutes a family. It definitely went places I did not expect it to go and I was right there with it the whole way.
Set in Canada, the UK and Scandinavia, it is a dark and hopeful novel, which partly suits the times we are in, and also is an escape from them. It has some of the feel of Scandinavian noir and is gripping from start to finish. I read the last half in one sitting, which as a father of three schoolkids meant staying up way too late. I didnt care; I enjoyed it so much. And it's published by a local Adelaide publisher.
I highly recommend The Miscreants, by Christopher Hawkes. Glimmer Press is also posting for free within Australia at the moment. I have attached the link for anyone who wants a good read, wants to support an Australian writer, wants to support a local publisher, or all of the above. https://www.glimmerpress.com.au/product/the-miscreants/
Go well."

Loving this interview with Christopher Hawkes on The Clothesline.
When asked about writing characters who behave in unforgivable ways, Christopher had this to say:
"I’m appealing to an audience who enjoys the moral complexities of identifying with the bad guy, which is much wider than most people will own up to. Humans are a murderous species, and a functioning society provides means of draining away these impulses for the greater good. And violence in art can offer great release. My Nan was one of the most caring and charitable people I’ve met but her bedside table was a bloodbath of crime fiction.”
