You're looking at a 'ring of fire' annular solar eclipse. It happened over the weekend, but unless you were in parts of North or South America, you might’ve missed it. NASA says during a ‘ring of fire’ eclipse, the moon passes directly in front of the sun, without completely covering it. Annular, meaning ring-shaped, refers to the glow from the sun that can be seen on the outer edges of the moon. Although the moon is much smaller than the sun, it’s also significantly closer to Earth, explaining how it blocks so much of the sun’s light. Solar eclipses happen a few times a year, but Australia won’t catch a glimpse of one until July 2028.
