Samille Mitchell Experienced journalist passionate about sharing written and video stories about colourful people, pl Words have power. They impart knowledge.

Knowledge fosters understanding. And understanding breeds compassion. That’s what inspires my writing about people, places and our amazing natural world. My work has taken me to the far-flung corners of Western Australia and beyond. I have been lucky enough to travel to Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Mauritius, New Zealand and extensively within WA on assignments for publications such as The West

Australian, Scoop Traveller and Sunday Times. I’ve covered a myriad environmental topics for the Department of Parks and Wildlife’s magazine LANDSCOPE (and was the magazine’s coordinating editor for seven years). I’ve authored the books Exploring WA’s natural wonders: national, marine and regional parks; Rediscover Perth Outdoors, a guide to natural recreation areas in and around Perth; Discovering the caves of Western Australia and Kalbarri for the department. And I’ve edited dozens of other books for the department. I’ve also written the Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways Guidebook for the Mid West Development Commission and penned countless articles for publications including Out There, Outback, Australian Geographic, The Geraldton Guardian and more. And I’m as excited about it today as ever—there’s still so much out there to learn, write about, photograph, and explore.

For three decades, marine ecologist Dr Chris Surman has made an annual pilgrimage to the Abrolhos Islands where he spends months each year studying seabirds....

Did you know Geraldton's beloved sea lions are actually really rare and we're super lucky to see them? Learned a lot and loved doing this video for Ports.

What a legend is this Carnamah local. Oh to have his energy at 92 years of age.

How love for a horse sparked this mum's quest to help children with autism. What an inspirational woman.

It's so great that answers to some of life's biggest questions are being worked on at the Murchison's Widefield Array.

Big brains working on big issues in our own backyard.

A painstaking search for 13-billion-year-old radio wave signals inches closer to helping answer the big questions of how life formed and what sparked the birth of the universe.

Apparently the Miss Horrocks comp was quite the event back in the day. Enjoy.

Had the best time filming this story with Fred Porter. Thanks for the laughs Fred.

Growing up, Fred Porter was desperate to leave his remote family farm for a far-flung place. But facing burnout and lockdowns, the marketing consultant returned home, finding happiness combining city work with country living.

When an aggressive cancer resulted in Nick Trethowan's leg being removed, he thought his dreams of farm life were over. But a can-do attitude and some simple adaptations are seeing him live out his dream of farming for life.

I had the best time filming this story last week.

It was amazing to see this historic treasure hidden way for so long.

And the light was a photographer's dream.
