Yesterday co-founder Andrew Fitzgerald of The Gospel Whiskey held a masterclass at Melbourneā€™s latest laneway bar Black Kite Commune. It is quite possibly the most informative and educational one we have had the pleasure of participating in, with Andrew not only providing participants with the background of the brand but also delving into the process of whiskey making from barrel to bottle, but most importantly how they honour the local Mallee grain they use. We sampled four drops including the latest Legacy Rye and the seductively sweet and rich Fortified Cask. Itā€™s worth mentioning that The Gospel recently won Gold at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) for their Straight Rye, so if you are a fan of this style and havenā€™t sampled their products, or are a single malt drinker who wants to try something new, definitely give these a go. And considering tomorrow marks the start of Rye July, there is no better time. šŸ„ƒ

On this World Martini Day we are sharing a real cracker that our very own created during lockdown as a bottled cocktail in collaboration with Imbue Distillery using their Suburban Gin. It was named Closing Time and Mel & Mick loved it so much that they popped it on the menu at their little bar Wander North in Ivanhoe and nearly three years later itā€™s still there and one of the most popular cocktails. If you would like to make it at home hereā€™s the recipeā€¦.šŸø

60ml Suburban gin
10ml Mancino Secco vermouth
15ml pickle juice

Stir down over ice and strain into a martini glass or coupe and garnish with a frond of wild fennel or regular fennel. Dill is also a good substitute.

5ml Strega Alberti
5ml lemon juice
5ml sugar syrup (optional)

Build on a slab of ice and garnish with a long slice of cucumber

In honour of our friend Shivam, founder of Long Rays who is battling Stage 4 stomach cancer, we have created this long drink using his wonderful tonic as a main ingredient, built it on a long DrinksPlinks ice slab, finished it with a long garnish and aptly named it The Long Road. Shiv was diagnosed over 12 months ago and with treatment options here in Australia exhausted, his family have set up a Gofundme page to raise money to get him overseas for more advanced medical care. They have already raised over $90,000 of their $385,000 goal, so if you love Long Raysā€™ products, are a supporter of our local Aussie craft producers, or just appreciate a good G&T, please consider donating to help a beautiful and deserving human who has been fighting but still has a long road ahead. Happy St Patrickā€™s Day!!! šŸ€ This Year weā€™re celebrating a wonderful collaboration between Irelandā€™s Teeling Whiskey Distillery and our very own BentSpoke Brewing Co located in Canberra. We have likened this to Guinness on steroids, maybe because itā€™s a stout thatā€™s been aged in Teeling whiskey barrels sent here from Dublin that still contained remnants of their golden spirit. Or maybe itā€™s because it comes in at a punchy 7% ABV. But possibly because it also has the cheeky addition of Teelingā€™s very tasty Small Batch whiskey matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Central American rum casks as well as some freshly brewed stout infused with coffee beans. All of this leads to a complex flavour profile thatā€™s gloriously rich, nutty and chocolatey with a hint of fruit and spice and of course the requisite creaminess thanks to a dose of nitrogen added to the can. This is a truly special brew carefully crafted by BentSpoke in an effort to honour the whiskey and allow it to shine. Available direct from the brewery or from Dan Murphy's, BWS and other select retailers, youā€™ll find it on tap at Boilermaker House where you can enjoy it with a dram of Small Batch to complete the experience. A very Melbourne martini tonight at Little Lon Distilling Co. made with their Yarra Strength Navy Gin, Maidenii Vermouth, Japanese Umami Bitters and a garnish of lemon thyme. Created with Yarra water taken from where the river meets the sea, it was treated and filtered and then distilled with local native botanicals that historically grew along the banks including lemon scented gum, strawberry gum, kelp, saltbush, river and native mints, westringia, and Geraldton wax. With only 500 bottles made, you can purchase one direct from the distillery with 10% of proceeds going to the Yarra Riverkeeper Association. Youā€™ve never probably drunk out of the Yarra before so nowā€™s your chance!! šŸ˜‰šŸø

Vermouth Tasting Extravaganza at the beautiful Prince Wine Store in South Melbourne today sampling some of the finest from Italy as well as Spain and those locally made here in Australia. If you havenā€™t tried vermouth before or thought itā€™s just that little sumthinā€™ sumthinā€™ you use in a martini then you may be surprised to know itā€™s not a spirit but a complex fortified wine thatā€™s been aromatised with various herbs and spices. It is often misunderstood and under appreciated, but perfect for mixing or to simply enjoy and appreciate on its own. It can be a wonderful aperitif topped with soda and garnished with a complementary citrus twist and served neat or over ice as digestif. Depending on the style it can also be enjoyed during a meal as a low alcohol alternative to a spirit or regular wine. So versatile and so worth giving a go.

Red Hill Market on first Saturday of each month from September to May was not the place I expected to meet Dean and Dave, the two chippies who decided to set up Organic Bay Distillery in Bonbeach. These two good mates decided to create organically certified products made using organic sugar cane ethanol and high quality botanicals and antioxidant rich superfoods. We loved The Pink One, a celebration of strawberry, raspberry and sumac with a touch of vanilla chai which paired beautifully with Sodasmithā€™s Finger Lime Soda, a nice alternative to tonic that allows all the citrus and berry flavours to shine through.

This coming Wednesday 31st August, Fable Melbourne is pairing with Australiaā€™s most awarded whisky distillery Starward for a three-course whisky matched supper event valued at $160 per person.

The Fable x Starward Supper includes a Starward whisky cocktail on arrival followed by a three course seasonal dinner by Fableā€™s Michelin-starred chef Alex Xinis, with each course paired to a select whisky from the award winning range. The evening will be hosted by Starwardā€™s Brand Ambassador Matty Follent, along with Fable Chef Alex Xinis.

In addition to two of Starwardā€™s multi-award winning single malts, the night will also allow whisky lovers to taste their new peated release which features tasting notes of peat, tropical fruit and peach.

Last week we were privileged to attend the media launch of Bombay Sapphireā€™s new Premier Cru Murcian Lemon gin at The Cargo Hall. Using citrus handpicked and sundried in the south east region of Murcia in Spain this small batch and limited gin celebrates all that we love about the Mediterranean. Very versatile, we enjoyed it in G&Ts, martinis and French 75ā€™s upon arrival with delicious canapĆ©s. The rest of the four-course dining experience, curated by chef Alejandro Saravia of Farmer's Daughters, was of course paired with beautiful cocktails created by some of our top bartenders.
