More than 90,000 pilgrims flocked in May 2025 to the Basilica of the Annunciation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Alba de Tormes, where the remains of St Teresa of Avila were displayed for veneration.

The previous August, her tomb in northwestern Spain had been reopened for the first time in a century for an in-depth study of her relics.

Both the inquiry and the crowds indicate widespread devotion to and enduring fascination with one of Spain’s most famous saints, the foundress of the Order of Discalced Carmelites whose feast day is 15 October.
