Some incredible pearls of wisdom from Kate Mahony & Alana Woodward from the Sydney Swans about how women's sport is doing so much more for society, and just creating female athletes on episode 2 of Everyday Greatness:

"I feel so fortunate to be one of those female players who's been able to play AFLW at the highest level because so many girls and women who came before us, and even some of our coaches now just never got that opportunity, so just to be a part of it is something that I cherish, and I know how fortunate I am to do that.

It's just something I'm so thrilled to be a part of"

Some incredible pearls of wisdom from Kate Mahony & Alana Woodward on the Sydney Swans about how women's sport is doing so much more for society, and just creating female athletes on episode 2 of Everyday Greatness:

"One of the big things when you look at male footballers and what they get across their career – hopefully they get a good career on the field, but off the field it's all the corrections, the jobs and the networks they can launch into, and I'm really passionate about making sure we look after our players not only on the field, but also give opportunities to our female players off the field, and in that they can inspire and help create pathways for the next generation coming through."

-Kate Mahony - Executive General Manager of AFLW at the Sydney Swans

Very humbling hearing how the Sydney Swans describe my journey:

“Barnaby Howarth will tell you that his success is all luck but for the resilience speaker and podcaster, it was as if he was born for this.

Howarth has lived an extraordinary life – surviving a gang attack and stroke, losing his first wife to cancer, and living as a diabetic – but he's more interested in the people who are quietly and perhaps are ordinarily making the world a better place.”

An honour to have a chat on Everyday Greatness with one of the most fascinating people in Australia…

Suzie Rhydderch - clinical psychologist at the Sydney Swans

Suzie talked eloquently about how people can just try their hardest and repair themselves, whether they win, lose or draw.

I am so proud of some of the conversations I have had on Everyday Greatness. So ahead of season, seven – to be cohosted by the Sydney Swans, I want to look back on some of those conversations. This one is with my cousin Prue Clarke – Founder of New Narratives - a newsroom in Africa, where the journalists are vulnerable people reporting on the situations where they themselves other ones, who are suffering…

Ordinary magic is made up of a combination of community, family and individual resilience, and the story of my cousin Prue Clark on episode 4 of this season sums it all up perfectly. Prue reported on the twin tower bombings on 9/11 in New York for ABC Australia - she recalls seeing bodies falling out of windows of high-rise buildings and suffered severe PTSD as a result. Using individual resilience, Prue’s next adventure was to convince the BBC to cover the Ebola crisis in Africa on radio - this was one of the catalysts of her finding family resilience - In every horrific situation she has reported on in her lifetime, after having her first child, she pictured him as one of the people suffering in that situation and that has helped her want to drive change in the world.

The change she drove has been significant - Prue founded New Narratives -A Newsroom in Africa where the reporters ARE the vulnerable people reporting on those situations where they have suffered. This has brought Prue’s Ordinary Magic full circle - where community resilience has helped her find her own peace…

“New Narratives has really helped.

I remember feeling my PTSD easing after reporting on some really heavy stories that sparked national conversation.”

Prue Clark
Barnaby's cousin and Founder New Narrativeas

We have spoken to some great people on Everyday Greatness, but on this episode, we have one of the best.

Ellen Hester is the office admin for Down Syndrome New South Wales and also happens to have down syndrome herself, and in this interview as well as being confident, funny and flat out, charming-when we recorded this interview in July, she also made the bold prediction that the Sydney Swans men’s AFL team would make the finals “As long as they do their best on the field and they push each other to their limits, and congratulations on the goal.”

Ellen was asked by the Swans after this interview to be a water runner for the women’s AFL team (who coincidentally made the AFLW finals for the first time in the teams history!)

Brett Kirk – former Sydney Swans co-captain sums up through his ACTIONS, not just his WORDS what it means to be a successful human being on episode two of season, six of Everyday Greatness…

Kirk told Scott Gibbons and I:

“I found Addi Road and through my mentor Sam Mostyn– it was through Covid – I had been stood down and wasn’t earning any money, and my understanding of who I was, and what I was to my family was being challenged – so I went to Addi Road and pack some hampers for people who couldn’t get food and were really struggling.”

Brett Kirk proves that successful people are the ones who keep planting seeds of small goodness when it feels like a waste of time, and everybody else is getting more ruthless and aggressive, but they keep doing it because they have faith everything will work out.
