Djerait woman Melissa Tipo helps young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women build passion for STEM through CSIRO's Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy. Her advice to Indigenous students:

“Embrace your Indigenous heritage, overcome imposter syndrome and believe in yourself! Remember, you are the legacy of Australia's first scientists. Seek supportive networks, explore STEM fields and never be afraid to reach out for help."

Melissa shared her story in an article published in the next issue of Double Helix magazine. Read it now on the CSIRO blog:

On this we're sharing a ribbiting blog piece from Nick Clemann and Michael Swan, herpetologists and authors of Frogs of Victoria.

Nick and Michael share their insights into what makes frogs so critical to our environment, and how books like theirs can inspire us to protect them. They also introduce us to three of Victoria's most interesting, and most imperilled, frogs.

Everyone is bugging out about Metamorphosis! 🦋

"[Metamorphosis] takes the reader on a fascinating journey examining some common, yet amazing insects, along with the scientists who have studied them." Kathy Ebert, News Bulletin of the Entomological Society of Queensland

"The authors are entertaining storytellers and have written a fascinating and often amusing account of how the study of insects has shaped history and continues to lead to remarkable discoveries." Maren Ostergard, Booklist

"McAlister and Washbourne have produced a wonderful book, one that’ll certainly appeal to insect enthusiasts, but also one that deserves to be read more widely." Gary Harris, Society for Insect Studies Circular

"Each chapter includes lots of truly fascinating material on the history of the discoveries and some remarkable people (not all men) who made them, and others who could see the potential there for imaginative adaptations of these marvels." Ian Fraser, Natural History Reviews

Researchers have shed light on the concerning threat posed by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to the reproductive health of humans and animals, livestock, and wildlife.

In a new Open Access article published in Reproduction, Fertility and Development, they highlight the persistence of these 'forever chemicals' in our environment and the various pathways through which humans and animals are exposed to them.

While current research offers insights into the potential health impacts, there's still much we don't know. Although efforts are underway to limit new sources of PFAS exposure, further research is needed to understand their effects and minimize harm.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a prominent class of persistent synthetic compound. The widespread use of these substances in various industrial applications has resulted in their pervasive contamination on a global scale. It is therefore concerning that PFAS have a propensity to accu...

Intrigued by Australia's amazing native plants? Author Catherine Clowes certainly is!

She completed her PhD last year on plant systematics, and this year is excited to share with the world her latest kids' book, Plantabulous! – showcasing Australian plants that can survive fire, plants with exploding seed pods, plants that can help clean up pollution and even the most ‘venomous’ plant in the world!

Coming in June, Plantabulous! is perfect for budding botanists aged 6 to 12.

Flashback to last week when we were at the 47th Annual ASSBI - Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment Conference!

Grahame Simpson and Jenny Fleming, Co-Editors-in-Chief of the journal Brain Impairment, presented a wonderful workshop for Early Career Researchers on how to get published, and Journal Manager Rebecca Ciezarek spent time getting to know the delegates in neuroscience, neurology, occupational therapy, speech therapy and more.

We took over the publication of Brain Impairment last year, and this was our first opportunity to interact with the ASSBI community in person. We look forward to seeing you again at the next conference!

New research from the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) at SAHMRI, has revealed senior people receiving home care packages spend more than twice the amount of days in hospital, compared to those living in residential aged care.

The study, published in Australian Health Review, the journal of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association, examined emergency department presentations, unplanned hospitalizations, potentially preventable hospitalizations and time in hospital.

Health initiatives in rural areas need to be geographically tailored, culturally anchored, and locally driven, say authors of a new study published in Journal of Primary Health Care, the Open Access journal of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.

Rural residents in Aotearoa New Zealand are known to have worse health outcomes than their urban counterparts, and were identified as an at-risk population during the pandemic. Despite this, disparities have been found between rural and urban vaccination rates.

The study aimed to gain insight into factors contributing to this disparity by exploring the experiences of those "on the ground" during the pandemic response.

In the battle to halt the cane toad invasion, conditioned taste aversion using 'wart wursts' is unlikely to be the answer, according to findings published in Wildlife Research last year.

Australian Wildlife Conservancy

Scientists have dropped sausages made out of cane toads to deter vulnerable wildlife in the Kimberley from eating the pest. Unfortunately, the snags don't appear to be working, but there's another plan afoot to protect the Pilbara.
