Many of us have been at the beach this summer, but have you considered using it as an opportunity to learn and nurture curiosity?

Our blog 'What Beaches Can Teach Us' has some tips based on content from a selection of our guides and children's books:

Explore coastal regions safely and follow the conservation code 👣

Be curious about what you might find on the beach! Take note of what you can identify, including colours and shapes 🔍

Take a look at any plastics you find and think about what they might have been used for and how weathered they are now. What could you do to help reduce plastic like this? 🥤

Write down your observations of wildlife. How many birds and animals did you see? What did they look like? What sounds did they make? 🐧

According to research published in Australian Health Review, a three-hour knee replacement operation has similar emissions to a 914-kilometre car trip - that's about the same as driving from Brisbane to Sydney.

The healthcare sector contributes an estimated 5.3 per cent of Australia's annual greenhouse gas emissions. The team of researchers behind the study conducted a life cycle assessment, collecting data for all surgical equipment, energy requirements for cleaning, and operating room energy use, and included previously documented anaesthesia data as well.

Their work could provide guidance in reducing an operation's carbon footprint through prudent equipment use, more efficient steam sterilisation with renewable electricity, and reduced single-use waste.

A new study has found that a changing climate will cause challenges for the survival of WA's iconic endangered Carnaby's Cockatoos.

Published in Pacific Conservation Biology, the research found that an increase in drier weather and hotter days is likely to decrease the birds' breeding and foraging habitat.

The authors of the study suggest that conservation actions to support Carnaby's Cockatoo populations should include preserving and regenerating habitat, as well as providing artificial nesting sites.

Pitcher this: a gigantic carnivorous plant covered in reddish 'hairs' like an orangutan.

A team of Malaysian and Australian botanists have documented a rare and elusive tropical pitcher plant in Australian Journal of Botany.

The largest pitcher they've found so far was 45 cm tall and capable of holding at least 2 litres of water. Additionally, it was covered in long, rusty red hairs, inspiring the team to name it Nepenthes pongoides after the orangutan, whose scientific name is Pongo.

The researchers recorded remains of prey in the pitchers, from beetles to centipedes, giant millipedes and even a freshwater crab, which most other such plants are too small to trap.

Unfortunately, due to its small population size and threat from poaching, the plant has been assessed as critically endangered.

“Tragically, it’s demand from horticulturists that drives the illegal removal of Nepenthes from the wild," says the study's co-author Alastair Robinson. "Two species of Nepenthes are already deemed extinct in nature thanks to collectors, whose willingness to pay top dollar drives poachers into the rainforest to collect ornamental plants for lucrative sale online.”

The study was published in the Open Access article, ‘Sabah’s hidden giant: Nepenthes pongoides (Nepenthaceae), a micro-endemic tropical pitcher plant from northern Borneo’, and an article about this research was published in Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/sites/grrlscientist/2024/12/27/giant-hairy-pitcher-plant-discovered-in-northern-borneo/

When your neighbour is struggling, the community rallies around them – even if that neighbour is a fish.

Keely Jobe’s small Tasmanian town shares its shores with the endangered red handfish. By telling the story of her involvement in local conservation efforts, Jobe considers how the community and scientists are both vital to saving at-risk species.
