Joel Deane kindly dropped by and signed copies of "The Norseman's Song"!

An ancient man without a past hails a taxi driven by a petty criminal with no future.

Reluctantly, the pair embarks on a journey in search of a legendary whaler and murderer known only as the Norseman. This is a one-way trip — but who’s taking who for a ride?

The Norseman’s Song is a stylish blend of gothic mystery and modern crime noir. Evoking the spirit of Joseph Conrad and Edgar Allan Poe, Joel Deane creates a violent and lyrical vision of contemporary Australia with the pace and energy of a road movie and the haunting atmosphere of a nightmare.

Just when you thought the bitter darkness of winter couldn't get any bleaker:

'A bold unfolding of a succession of nightmares issuing from probable truths and feverish imaginings, a striking juxtaposition of legendary past and seedy present.' The Sydney Morning Herald

'This is beautifully written crime noir by a writer in total command of his craft. A gripping, yet lyrical, read' — The Big Issue Australia

Listen to survivors Piers Groves and poet Joel Deane as they share their experience with stroke and delve into the transformative impact and the subsequent challenges they've faced. Central to their conversation is the theme of resilience in the face of adversity, as they navigate life after stroke.
One of the topics they explore is the profound shift in perspective brought about by their strokes. Both Piers and Joel recount how their near-death experiences forced them to confront their mortality head-on, fundamentally altering their outlook on life.

Thanks to author G S Dickson for dropping in to sign copies of his debut novel A Minor Fifth, a bitter industry satire, a vast human comedy, an experiment in tragedy. It looks through multiple viewpoints at the legends we construct around all-too-human individuals - funny, moving, mind-bending — it’s a love letter to Australian rock music. "This fictional Aussie rock icon could be any one of a few actual ageing rock stars in the Aussie music universe. 'The way that we remember figures like that in culture – they become pervasive ... It’s the dead rock star as martyr.'"

Friends, we can't wait to share this brilliant debut novel with you — A Minor Fifth by GS Dickson.

It was shortlisted for the Vogel a few years back and is easily the funniest and most innovative thing I've read in years. We all know editing is a hateful task so any book that keeps you laughing out loud and shaking your head at its invention and ambition through it all must have something special.

Rohan Wilson describes it as if 'David Mitchell and William Faulkner must have written a novel together. It’s very funny, sad, moving, engaging ... It’s innovative, the point of view shifts, it takes a lot of risks — it’s an incredible book.’

The Faulkner comparison make sense (you'll see) but, for my money, the animating spirit here is James Joyce. And yes I know how that sounds but it has that same playful love of the music and poetry and fun that makes a novel worth reading. Only in this case the music is classic Aussie rock 'n' roll — think Aztecs, Coloured Balls, the heights of AC/DC, the depths of X Factor.

A Minor Fifth by GS Dickson hits stores later this month but you can have an advance copy, plus free postage, and $5 discount. Just follow the link and use code BILLY at checkout.
