Today on #SharingSunday we're talking with another North Queensland author and illustrator, Eva-Marie Welsh of Eva Childrens Books.
Eva's books are wonderfully colourful, with beautiful illustrations of native Australian animals. My 7-year-old son, Jack, who struggles a bit with his reading loves her books, and can confidently read them out loud.
KB7: Can you tell us a bit about yourself, Eva?
Eva: I grew up in Germany and left to live in Australia as a young adult. I live in Far North Queensland, a small place called Mission Beach. When people ask me where it is, my answer is: "It's where cyclone Larry and Yasi hit, which were very big cyclones." I have 4 children, which are young adults now. I absolutely love being a mother.
KB7: What inspired you to create your books?
Eva: I published a children's book about Western Australia in 2003. 3 weeks later, we moved to Mission Beach in Queensland. I took a break for the next 6 years enjoying my 4 young children. My plan was to rewrite and try some better illustrations for the W.A. book, because I wasn't happy with the book as it was. In 2009, I painted a few animals for this book, showed them to my friend Sharon, who said: "Eva, forget about the W.A. book, we need a cassowary book. "Sharon owned a gift shop and said, it was needed in Mission Beach." Also, my great love for wildlife and nature made me start in the first place back in 2003. So, my first book of the evabooks series is a book about cassowaries - Cassy's Tale - published in 2009.
KB7: Tell us about your illustrations! How do you create them?
Eva: I get inspired by our Australian wildlife and fauna. I am constantly taking photos, which I use most of the time. I also use other pictures as inspiration.
KB7: Last but not least, Eva. What's your favourite thing about the bush?
Eva: I love the bush, because it's not so crowded a
