When the Jones family lived at Mt Emu Plains Station, the creek was literally in their back yard. The Jones kids had so much fun fishing, swimming and kayaking in it, but did you know that 26% of drownings in Australia happen in creek, rivers and dams?
It's incredibly important for bush kids to know how to swim, but often swimming lessons aren't easily accessible.
Thankfully, groups like the ICPA (Isolated Children and Parents Association) offer camps where kids are able to come together for a few days with dedicated swim instructors and other bush kids.
We are so thankful for the dedicated people who work so hard to make sure our bush kids know how to swim!
Anyone can drown, no one should. On July 25, people across the world mark World Drowning Prevention Day.

On we thought we would share this poem from our book, 'Brawler of the Pen,' by Jet Jones.
The Song the Hobble Chains Sang.
This is the song the hobble chains sang, when the last drover hung up his reins.
And this is the tune of a Condamine bell, with the plant horses turned out to graze.
This is the noise a packsaddle makes, as it hangs gathering dust.
And the silent cry of the bits and the spurs, as time slowly turns then to rust.
This is the sigh that the boss drover sighed, as he watched the roadtrains roll by.
And the tears that flowed free in the horse tailers heart, as he watched all he knew slowly die.
And this is a song of an era that’s gone, and boys it ain’t coming back.
But it’s ghost may be heard as it pushes the mob,
through the heat down a dry dusty track.
This is the drum of the relentless rain, and a swag that never would dry.
And of horses that bucked on a cold winter’s morning, and made for one hell of a ride.
This is the echo of the bullocks that rushed, at night on the hard broken ground.
And the clatter of hooves as the ringers they rode, through the scrub trying to wheel them around.
This is the clang that the cranky old cook, on the side of his camp oven made.
And the cornbeef and damper you ate by the fire at the end of another long day.

'In town, it's never completely quiet. It takes getting used to, if you're from the bush. It's hard to sleep with the constant thrum of traffic outside your door. The bush is never completely quiet, but it's a different kind of noise: it's the sound of birds, cicadas, and frogs. The sound of cattle in the yards, and the wind rustling the grass and the trees.'

Today on #SharingSunday we're talking with another North Queensland author and illustrator, Eva-Marie Welsh of Eva Childrens Books. Eva's books are wonderfully colourful, with beautiful illustrations of native Australian animals. My 7-year-old son, Jack, who struggles a bit with his reading loves her books, and can confidently read them out loud. KB7: Can you tell us a bit about yourself, Eva? Eva: I grew up in Germany and left to live in Australia as a young adult. I live in Far North Queensland, a small place called Mission Beach. When people ask me where it is, my answer is: "It's where cyclone Larry and Yasi hit, which were very big cyclones." I have 4 children, which are young adults now. I absolutely love being a mother. KB7: What inspired you to create your books? Eva: I published a children's book about Western Australia in 2003. 3 weeks later, we moved to Mission Beach in Queensland. I took a break for the next 6 years enjoying my 4 young children. My plan was to rewrite and try some better illustrations for the W.A. book, because I wasn't happy with the book as it was. In 2009, I painted a few animals for this book, showed them to my friend Sharon, who said: "Eva, forget about the W.A. book, we need a cassowary book. "Sharon owned a gift shop and said, it was needed in Mission Beach." Also, my great love for wildlife and nature made me start in the first place back in 2003. So, my first book of the evabooks series is a book about cassowaries - Cassy's Tale - published in 2009. KB7: Tell us about your illustrations! How do you create them? Eva: I get inspired by our Australian wildlife and fauna. I am constantly taking photos, which I use most of the time. I also use other pictures as inspiration. KB7: Last but not least, Eva. What's your favourite thing about the bush? Eva: I love the bush, because it's not so crowded a
