g m 🥲 everyday we don’t take for granted the responsibility and privilege of getting to do what we do here at race matters🌀having a one hour broadcast for racially marginalised people might be a given now on - but this show has been tirelessly fought for and lovingly upheld many years before this

a big, big, big part of that is because of the one and only who co-created this show and the space it’s offered countless people in a time where finding independent, critical, principled media was (and sometimes still feels) few and far between 📝♥️🔎

we really can’t stress race matters litcheralllyyyy would not be here without Tanya Ali and yet somewhere in the haze of post-lockdown she graciously stepped out of her volunteer role as executive producer and never got a final show 🌹

SO this morning we are going to honor her her years of work and the real labour it took to uphold it, and are excited to have her as our special guest 🫶🏽

hello 👋🏽 we’ve been noticing some new listeners and followers and wanted to take a little moment to introduce ourselves 🪻we are a small team of (mostly) volunteers making radio on unceded Gadigal Country on and are indebted to a legacy of storytelling and resistance that has unfolded here and beyond ~

so much of what we do here is made possible working as a collective to bring truth telling and complexity forward in a media landscape that continues to stifle and quash anti-racist, anti-colonial movements. thank you so much for tuning in 📻and thank you to all our guests and contributors who have trusted this platform to air their work ♥️

over the last six months we’ve created a ~new~ constellation of contributors bringing with them a unique set of cultural wisdom, experiences and interests ✴️you’ve been hearing some of these pieces on air, but we’ve had a stellar team coming together every week to share ideas and take care of the mechanics of making radio that doesn’t always get heard ☁️lots of what happens here is ineffable or undocumented: sharing tea and snacks, giggling, learning, holding each other to account, mindmapping, ocean swims, checking in with each other, in and outside of this show. radio is about connection as much as the product 🧶

we recorded a cute little ep to introduce you to our new weekly team

Samantha Haran

we shared moments of ancestral practices, song we’ve been loving, texts that radicalised us chicken run is about workers rights⚒️🪽our everyday acts of resistance, and why radio is important to us. We wanted to find a pocket of levity amid the need for vigilance and ongoing staunch and loving movement it’s a little bit silly and 🥹

In case you missed it, yesterday we aired the live talk we had held at The Red Rattler as part of 𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐒 with Darren Lesaguis, Kween G, Aaliyah-Jade Bradbury & prince.
Sharing some highlights soon, but before we do we wanted to talk a moment to honor the work of one of Race Matters' newest producers and creators - Alicia Zhao! You've been seeing her incredible event posters across our platforms. She really captured the textures and feelings of experimentation, generative ideas, playfulness and complexity we hoped to bring forward ~ you'll also be hearing more of Alicia on air and can't wait for what she co-creates as part of Race Matters!
Here's a sneaky work in progress, let's give some love 🌹

Come make radio with us!
We are really keen to share this unique platform and continue to tell stories with a "by us, for us" attitude. We are looking for contributors on air and behind the scenes who are First Nations and People of Colour*, of all intersections and particularly those who are lesser-heard even within anti-racist spaces. There are a heap of possibilities and we are receptive to learning about you and how you want to collaborate with us. Opportunities to share what you think is important, and to learn and connect.
Follow this link to submit your ideas and expression of interest, and we will be in touch in March 2023.

MONTHLY PODCAST ROUND UP / MAY 2022

A month of speaking directly and potently in conversations about race, anti-imperialism and forging genuine community through care and shared ethos.

We had a guest program that explored how two First Nation-led surf collectives that are reclaiming and actively shaping reconnection with waterways. We spoke to Antoinette Lattouf about how working in anti-racism comes at the loss and change of relationships. We traversed the Filipino diaspora and learnt about the ongoing resistance and immediate calls to action with Anakbayan Sydney. We learnt from Happy Feraran on how community consultation ensures art remembers and tends to stories that can't be lost through the play Ate Lovia.

MONTHLY PODCAST ROUND UP / APRIL 2022

Another big month for us here at Race Matters, and as always we didn't shy away from conversations of vulnerability and reckoning.

We chatted cultivating ritual and connection in our Q***r Muslim Ramadan Special. We held sacred space to grieve and speak through the ways in which we process loss as marginalised communities. We delved deep into a damning report on lost work and increased racism for First Nations artists and creatives of colour. We shared intimate conversation with poet and woodcarver Omar Musa on how to create from a place of euphoria, healing and personal myth-making.

You can listen back to all our episodes at fbiradio.com/racematters or wherever you get your podcasts!

31/03/2022

We were so moved by our conversation with actor, singer and cultural practitioner and Majeda Mo Beatty. On our latest episode, we chat to Majeda about Blak joy, unpacking Blak resilience; and creating spaces that go beyond an acknowledgement to celebrate First Nations expression and vulnerability.

Listen now, wherever you get your podcasts.
