The 2024 Australian Songwriting Contest is NOW OPEN!
Be a part of Australia’s longest running song competition, now in its 44th year, backed by a fantastic group of mighty Sponsors, who’ve ensured a great array of prizes are there for you to win. Hello – lots to tell you😊

Firstly, thank you to all who entered the 2023 Australian Songwriting Contest, which closed in early January. We have your entries being safely looked after.

HOWEVER – there was some confusion due to us running the 2023 Contest across the end of the year. It meant that the 2023 Awards would have to be held in 2024. We did this for the 2022 Contest – ran it late in the year then had the Awards in 2023, and noticed back then that people started thinking those Awards were for the 2023 Contest rather than the 2022 Contest. Although we attempted to do a catch up, it wasn’t possible because the whole process takes a lot of time.

SO - we have just had an ASA Board meeting, and agreed that we really need to get back to running the Contest AND its Awards in the same year, as they always used to be. It was Covid-related dramas and delays got things out of whack. And although as I said, we did try, we haven’t been able to claw back time enough to get the Contests and Awards happening in the same year. This is because we have a two-tiered process of judging, which although it ensures everyone’s work is heard by multiple ears in the most fair and unbiased way, it also takes a LONG time! Then the size and complexity of the Awards themselves, also make their preparation take a LONG time.

Hence, it’s been decided that we need to run 2 contests into one, so we can resume the old timing of Entries in late March – May, then the Awards in October or November.

THE RESULT is that we are RIGHT NOW launching the 2024 Australian Songwriting Contest, with entries open between now and May. So here goes!!! To upload any additional work, please get straight onto it and use the following link to the Entry Platform:

You will see towards the end of the year, that we will be talking about the National Songwriting Awards being for the 2023-24 Australian Songwriting Contest. Next year the 2025 Contest will open in March, and the 2025 National Songwriting Awards will follow in the same year.

Please be assured, your current entries are safe and will be judged along with the rest according to our new time schedule…ie, in the middle of this year. So sorry for the wait that this creates, but in the end it’s going to make everything work better.

You are welcome to go ahead and enter any other or new songs, and they’ll be carefully added to those entries of yours that we already have…or you don’t need to add any more…up to you entirely.

Hope this makes sense, and thank you in anticipation of your tolerance and understanding.

Secondly, after a long-term commitment by Alan Gilmour, his wonderful e-newletter is now in the hands of a new Editor…namely Monte Pemberton. It’s hard to thank Alan enough for his contribution of time and effort to this point (and he’s still our Vice Chairman and Treasurer), but we’re all excited and looking forward to Monte’s first edition, due out April/May.

Looking forward to hearing your 2024 entries, and combining them with the 2023 entries for a mind-blowing judging period mid-year!!

We’re excited to hear what this 2022 Contest will present us with!

We were impressed with last year’s winners, and when this 2022 Contest has been judged, we will be seeking to reward Top 10 placegetters with increased exposure. This will allow more people to hear your work, and that’s what songwriters need.

Here we go! Although there is no content currently showing on this link, (and it will tell you there’s “Nothing Here”), don’t worry! Come 7pm AEDT on Sunday 30 October 2022, the 2021 VIRTUAL NATIONAL SONGWRITING AWARDS will be connected to that section of the Wests Ashfield club site, and everyone will be on the same page! Logins can happen across the first 12min holding period, so just get into it during that time. It will be exciting to see all the results roll out, as no one has had any sneak previews!!! For those who don’t know, Wests Ashfield is one of the ASA’s Major Sponsors, and we’re very appreciative of their ongoing patronage of the Arts!

Drum roll!!! As many of you have been waiting to hear, the ASA will be rolling out the Virtual Awards of the 2021 Australian Songwriting Contest, at 7pm on Sunday 30 October 2022.

This will be the first moment that the Top 10 results are revealed, along with the Rudy Brandsma Award winner, and other exciting things like the Regional Coordinator of the Year honor and the induction of Terry Britten into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, one of our entrants will be crowned APRA/ASA Songwriter of the Year, which will be hugely gratifying for them!!!

Although the decision had to be made to do our Awards as a virtual event for the second year running – due to the threat at that time which omicron was making (and our total inability to afford the risk of a cancelled live event) – we would love you all to log in and experience the announcements together! We will put the link up on this homepage closer to the date, but you can certainly start inviting the family members and friends who you’d like to sit around your computers for the big unveiling! Get your own little house parties going. There will be people tuning in from right across Australia and the World! Last time we had over 1,000 different logins and hence many thousands of viewers, depending on the exact numbers gathered around each of those computers.

Let’s do it in a big way, and all breathe through it together!!!

And next year, we hope to be back to the massive live event that so many have enjoyed before.

At last!!! After holding out for a live event, then eventually throwing our lot in with the genius of a first-rate technical team, the Australian Songwriters Association (ASA) is extremely excited to announce the place, date and time of the 2020 Virtual National Songwriting Awards! All the results of last year’s Australian Songwriting Contest will be revealed at this event, on Sunday 16 May 2021, at (Sydney time) 7pm sharp, with a gather period for everyone to log in from 6.45pm.
We expect a host of mini viewing parties will engage with cyberspace at that time, all finding out the results at the same moment, around Australia and across the World.
So, begin organising your gathering now!!! Contact all your family, friends, fans, supporters, band members, engineers, producers, roadies and any other interested parties! Invite them all along to a spot near you where you are in command of a screen…be it laptop, computer, digital tv, or any other viewing means that will allow you to access the link to the biggest show in town!!!

The 2020 Virtual National Songwriting Awards will run for approximately 1½ hrs and will include ASA Patron Glenn A Baker’s induction of Colin Hay (Men At Work) into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, Kirk Pengilly (INXS) will recite the Lyrics Category’s winning piece, and three ASA Members’ performance clips will be shown. Snippets of all the Winning songs will there to be enjoyed, allowing you to experience an interesting range of new songs, and a great expose of what’s currently the cutting edge amongst our wonderful songwriting community, who have really fired up creatively in these difficult Covid times.
Top 30 recipients who’ve been holding their breath, will finally find out if they made that difficult leap to Top 10! An ASA Regional Coordinator will be saluted, and an ASA Member will receive an exquisite Maton guitar in recognition of great songwriting. And the grand announcement of the 2020 APRA/ASA Songwriter of the Year will be made, with APRA handing over $3,000 cold hard cash to the winner.
It will be a wonderful show, so sort out now how to best be a part of it. Crank up the BBQ, fill up the fridge, find a comfy pillow and get ready to be seated and paying attention before kickoff!

Top 10 – the Top 10 of the 2020 Australian Songwriting Contest has been determined, and the exciting results are under lock and key, awaiting their announcement at the 40th National Songwriting Awards. Unfortunately, the Board’s hope of running a Live award show in the New Year was thwarted by the Northern Beaches and Berala COVID outbreaks, so a Virtual event is now being set up. The date will be announced as soon the planning team get the ok from the technical people. One extra special thing associated with the online event, is that the 1st place winners will not know before the night that they have achieved this…because they will not need to prepare in advance for a live performance. So it will be really something when all is revealed! The timeline is expected to be around late March.
