Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is encouraging residents to follow barbecue safety advice to avoid serious ‘mis-steaks’ during October long weekend celebrations.
FRNSW Acting Commissioner, Paul McGuiggan, said simple precautions and a little bit of planning helps to avoid accidents, prevent fires and keep loved ones safe.
“Have your barbecue set up in an area that has been cleared of vegetation, on a firm, level base sheltered from the wind and away from structures such as your house, garden shed and fences,” Acting Commissioner McGuiggan said.
“Have a supply of water close by and, if possible, a fire extinguisher as well.
“In the event of a fire, we’ll be there…but every second counts and you can reduce your risk of injury or damage by following some simple steps.”
Top barbecue safety tips include:
• Service and maintain your barbecue correctly, following the manufacturer’s instructions for start up and shut down procedures;
• Check gas cylinders for expiry date, rust or damage and make sure connections are clear and fit properly before lighting;
• After use, make sure the gas is turned off at the cylinder;
• Never put flammable liquid on a barbecue;
• Check Total Fire Ban details before lighting your barbecue;
• Keep children away from the barbecue;
• Make sure lighters and matches are in a secure place;
• If a gas leak occurs, and it is safe to do so, shut off the cylinder immediately and allow any gas to disperse; and
• After use, make sure the gas is turned off at the cylinder
Call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
Barbecue fire safety fact sheets can be downloaded at www.fire.nsw.gov.au and Total Fire Ban information at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au For further advice or information, contact your nearest FRNSW station.

With the weather warming, and more people going out and enjoying their motorcycles, Police urge the public to take care on the roads while riding.
Traffic South West with the assistance of Traffic Operations conducted a two-day operation on Friday and Saturday nights (September 17-18) targeting speeding offences in and around South West Sydney. Officers took action against 136 drivers and riders for speeding offences with 14 of those for offences over 30km/h or 45km/h over the speed limit.

Officers from Traffic South West with the assistance of Traffic Operations conducted a 2 day operation over last Friday and Saturday night (17th/18th Sept) targeting Speeding offences in and around South West Sydney. Officers took action against 136 drivers and riders for speeding offences with 14 of those for offences over 30km/h or 45km/h over the speed limit.

Following a tragic double fatal involving motorcycle riders and continued complaints about excessive speeds, Traffic South West deployed more than 30 Highway Patrol officers over the two nights. Police issued 136 penalty notices in relation to speed offences and charged 25 people with a range of serious traffic and criminal offences.

Of note, following a pursuit, officers arrested and charged a 26 year old Carlingford man after his speed was checked at 180km/h on Silverwater Road, Silverwater. The rider had his licence suspended on the spot and his motorcycle confiscated for a period of 3 months. The rider is responsible for the daily storage fee of the cycle as well as the towing fee for his motorcycle. He will face Parramatta Local Court on the 31st October 2024.

With the weather warming, and more people going out and enjoying their motorcycles, Police urge the public to take care on the roads while riding. While nobody wants to receive a penalty notice for speeding, the reality of the alternate consequences is much worse and something our officers and your family don't want.

Police are appealing to road users to stay safe on the road ahead of the upcoming school holidays.
With the aim of keeping the road toll at zero during the school holiday period, police will be out in force to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely.
The school holidays begin on Monday (September 30) and conclude on Friday, October 9.
As of Wednesday (September 25), in NSW there had been 221 fatal crashes resulting in 244 lives lost compared with 220 crashes and 248 lives lost at the same period last year.
Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol, Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver, is urging all road users to take personal responsibility for their actions and keep safety as the top priority.
“Police want everyone to get their destination safely and to enjoy the school holidays,” he said.
“Our officers will be out in force over the entirety of the school holidays conducting speed enforcement along with random breath testing and drug testing and will not tolerate actions that put other road users at risk.
“People should anticipate heavier traffic on our roads particularly around popular holiday destinations.
“Please be patient and allow extra travel time with enough planned rest breaks. Police will also perform additional patrols on the major thoroughfares and coastal roads.”
Police will also be focusing on key transport routes on the NSW/Victoria and NSW/Queensland borders.
“We remind everyone that if you are travelling with extra passengers and luggage the additional weight means your vehicle may handle differently and will require extra distance to stop,” Asst Comm Driver said.
“If the road is wet, you will need even more distance between your vehicle and the one in front should you have to stop suddenly.”

Australians are reminded to ‘think pharmacy first’ for the treatment of everyday health conditions, as pharmacists across the country, upskill to deliver more for patients.
Pharmacy Guild of Australia National President and Cairns pharmacist, Professor Trent Twomey, said pharmacists were doing more for their patients than ever before, providing Australians with more choice and more affordable primary health care options.
“Already highly qualified health professionals, pharmacists are upskilling to increase the scope of the services they deliver, including being able issue prescriptions and advice for minor ailments like earaches, skin conditions and UTIs and administering a range of vaccinations,” Professor Twomey said.“Pharmacists are a critical part of a holistic health system. We are putting our hands up to do more, to take the pressure of GPs and, more importantly, to keep Australians out of emergency departments,” Professor Twomey said.
“With pharmacy playing a more versatile role in the health care system, Australians with more serious conditions can be seen by their GP faster, when they need it most.”
New research reveals overwhelming support for pharmacists to step up, with 9 in 10 Australians saying they backed pharmacists to offer more primary health care services.
The data also shows pharmacists are highly trusted, with 82 per cent of Australians saying they have confidence in their pharmacist to provide health advice for common, non-complex conditions.
Professor Twomey said the good news is with more than 36,107 pharmacists working across 5,900 community pharmacies nationwide, access to health care services has the potential to be better than ever.
“On this World Pharmacist Day, we celebrate the critical role community pharmacies play in keeping Australians healthy and easing the burden on the greater health care system.”
More than 95 per cent of metropolitan Australians live within 2.5 kilometres of a pharmacy, with 83 per cent of regional Australians withinfive kilometres. Many pharmacies are open evenings and weekends, further facilitating access.
