The Ticking Time Bomb of the Agricultural Industry...
The agricultural industry is under threat! There is a big issue that is slowly eroding the rural way of life and the pillars that support our farmer’s livelihood. If we don’t do something about it soon, we will have ghost towns in the country and nobody to work the land, let alone provide support services.
Farmers are experiencing a growing workforce vacuum. Less and less young and skilled people are prepared to work in agriculture due to the remoteness, disconnection from society, the lack of internet, and the lure of high paying jobs in the shiny cities.
I am passionate about doing my bit to turn this tide around. There are so many diverse and rewarding careers to be had in Agriculture – people just don’t know about them. It is such great industry to be a part of, where you get to develop skills usually way beyond your years and also experience the beauty and groundedness of being part of working with mother nature.
Watch this video and share it with your network so we can inspire people in the industry and too the industry.
Farmers are the best environmentalists Australia has.
Farmers are challenged every year like no other industry: the Australian population keeps growing, but the land available for agriculture is shrinking. Population growth brings with it more mouths to feed and more land is being sold to build houses.
How do you keep producing more and more food from the same amount of land or less? And then look after the environment at the same time?
Sounds like an impossible task doesn’t it?
But our farmers take on this challenge year of year not just to sustain their own livelihood but to ensure their farm can be sustainable for generations to come.
They have to embrace technology and at the same time deeply understand the science of what it takes to nurture their land so it can keep on producing good yields without depleting the nutrients, ensuring they regenerate the land after every harvest and by spelling country after grazing it with livestock. Throw in the unpredictability of Mother Nature and you have a juggling act that would have most people running for the hills!
And if you think that isn’t enough of a challenge, try buying everything at retail, selling everything at wholesale and paying for the freight both ways!
If you ask me every farmer deserves a medal. But our farmers are a resilient bunch and it is not in their nature to make a fuss or look for sympathy. They simply shrug their shoulders and get on with the job at hand. Which is why they inspire me even more.
Watch this video to get an insight of how our farmers are coming up with innovative ways to preserve our environment and keep feeding our nation….
