Outrunning The Storm
Right before Christmas several years ago, I was in New Zealand visiting my Dad.
We took a run over to the West Coast to check out some rivers.
On our last day we could tell some serious weather was on its way, but I needed one last fish before the Christmas break.
So my Dad dropped me at a road bridge and I would walk 10kms to the next road access to get picked up.
I knew my hours there were seriously numbered, so I legged it from pool to pool as the storm clouds gathered.
This was the last fish I caught before I made it to the car, just as the storm hit and it poured for the entire journey back across to the East of the mountains.

Breakdown
My dad (Cory Scott) took me out fishing but when we got to the river it was flooded and brown water, so we were driving home and dad's car lost all the power and it wouldn't go. I was scared, but dad said everything will be ok that he had two sleeping bags and a light that will last all night, and we would be ok. Dad ran to a farmers house and called mum who was working and couldn't pick us up till midnight, so dad said it would be rude not to fish, so we walked down to the waterfall that he and mum got married at. I was videoing dad for some pocket money but when he got this cool brown I wanted to take a photo with the waterfall behind. – Cruz Scott 10 years

The moment
I was fishing in NZ and caught a perfect trout on a small dryfly. The water was gin clear as most of the time in this incredible country!
I took my underwater camera and asked my friend to release the fish for me, the release is the best moment for me, this is always a great emotion to see the fish return to the river to fight another day.

As the season was drawing to a close I went down to the old bridge to look at the river and it was to beautiful not to capture.

Snapper swirl splash and sparkle
This image showcases the development in my saltwater fly fishing over the last twenty years. Snapper are the most prized fish species in New Zealand, commercially and recreationally. When I started in saltwater fishing the universal approach to snapper was a heavy outfit, fast sinking line and the biggest heaviest fly because you would be in a boat in deep water and fighting tidal currents. Not owning a boat this basically put them out of my reach. However that world was rocked when I discovered snapper off a local beach in Auckland in water less than 2 meters deep – and what fun they were on a 7 weight, floating line while wading waist deep water! When this photo was taken a few years on I was drifting a fly under an indicator, trout style, on a 5 weight outfit. The darkness of water is from the black volcanic rocks endemic to the Auckland foreshore, the sunlight sparkles of early afternoon sun after mowing the lawn, the swirl and splash of a decent sized snapper enticed in the shallows rather than dredged from the depths. This is what fly fishing does to elevate our quarry, engender respect for enviroment and can even integrate into a suburban lifestyle.

Jude Fly Fishing on dusk.
On the bend in the river, its calm and quiet. At dusk, its a peaceful place to come and practice the skill of flicking and casting. Jude is a keen fisherman and enjoys catching trout in a creek near home, called Yaven Creek near Adelong and in the Tumut River ( mouth of the Murrumbidgee River).
The rod he uses is an abu garcia. It's one my husband also uses. The biggest trout caught fly fishing on this rod is 900grams using a nymph.
Jude loves fly fishing because it gives him a break from the spinnerbait fishing that him and his father do. He is able to work on his skills in a more peaceful place, not being too concerned with the catch but more with the experience, being outside at the nicest part of the day.

Explosion of red
I spent a few days camping and fishing along the Murrumbidgee River. This was one of the first Browns of the trip and the most colourful and vibrant fish of the bunch. I just had to capture the intricate and elegant colour patterns that encompassed its body.

"Perfect from the evolution"
Took this image on a sea run brown trout in sunset. I was focus on the back fin with my macro, and when I get closer with my lens it looks like the fish scales have not been perfected placed in a row…..this might not appear perfect for us but perfect from the evolution.

Glass on the Bend
In the height of summer, Scott from Indulgence Flyfishing and I were out on a little creek. I was fishing glass, Scott thought he was. But he had taken the wrong rod out of the car, and treated one of his graphite sticks to some unexpected abuse.
There's nothing like seeing a glass rod bend on itself, especially when it wasn't a glass rod to begin with!

First tusky on fly
My first Tusky on fly. I've only been flyfishing for 12 months and this was the fish that made me take up the sport. With no experience of chasing these fish I've had many hours solo in my tinny Minn Kotaring bays with little sightings and little shots. I scored a lightwind sunny day so I headed out to a new stretch with tuskies on the mind. I was on the Minn for almost a kilometre till I seen a big green tractor in shin deep water tailing. My heart was pumping out of my chest as I tried to cast my flexo crab infront of this fish. I spooked this fish with average casts and was kicking myself. As the start of the run in started incoming Tuskies started appearing before my eyes with many spooking, snags and cod ruining the shots. My last shot for the day as the tide was getting deep I managed to get a eat and had to chase this fish on the Minn as he headed out deep for the bombies. With many lunges for freedom and a solo grab I had my first. Was so pumped and now even more addicted.

In this issue, we chase down some epic specimens from cod and barra in Australia to Golden Dorado in Bolivia as well as some seriously fit trout in the Oberon region of NSW. The lakes serve up some substantial trout in an emerging Tassie fishery and across the ditch in two lesser-known lakes. We learn lessons on yellowfin bream, mudeye feeders, NZ flats and cutting-edge approaches fresh from the World Championships. And dropping it back a gear we connect with some Snowy Mountain soul. Andrew Harding , Aussie Fly Fisher , Peter Watson , Steven Dally , Craig Worthington , Chris Burgess, Cherie Forbes , Jeff Forsee , Tom Jarman , Leighton Adem , Peter Broomhall Thomas Cramp Rowan Robinson
In this issue, there is lots to learn, beginning with how to speak trout in Kiwi, putting the permit puzzle together, pursuing estuary GT, tackling whiting and short sessions to avoid work. Lake Echo, Tasmania, is rediscovered at one end and at the top end we take a quick whip around the possibilities of FNQ on fly. A connection is made between fishing and hunting, the joy of tropical freshwater JPs is a highlight, and in the UK we uncover Killer Shrimp. In this issue, dive back into Tassie with early-season flood fishing, extended expeditions and midge brilliance on Burbury. The adventures continue on the Thredbo Valley Track, and we drift for Murray cod. We reboot a couple of classics in fly fishing literature and reconnect with the more soulful aspects of angling. The contemplation continues considering the right boat for fly fishing. In the salt, we chase snapper from the rocks in NZ, connect with bream in South West Victoria and start with the fundamentals of flatties on fly. Topping it off, we break the bleakness of winter with some summer sophistication in Trentino, Italy, over a glass of Pino Grigio. Tom Jarman , Aussie Fly Fisher , Peter Watson , Steven Dally , Leighton Adem , Craig Worthington , Peter Broomhall , Chris Burgess, James Fuller , Cherie Forbes , Marina Gibson Fishing , Fly Fishing Nation , Stephan Gian Dombaj Junior
In this issue 110 we delve into a range of flies across different species and varying applications from CDC to Dahlbergs to saltwater jigs, Taupo nymphs and more. Achievements are celebrated with the Big 4 permit, a top to bottom two-wheeled expedition on the Thredbo and a new species on fly in the Chatham Islands. Outmanouvering La Nina in Tasmania is also on the cards and mullet madness sets in. In travel, there is valuable advice for Aussies travelling across the ditch and a pilgrimage to Canada for bullies.
