Yesterday, the Tasmanian House of Assembly in Australia officially recognized the Greek, Armenian and Assyrian Genocides. This recognition follows a similar recognition in the state of New South Wales in 2013.
According to the resolution, the Tasmanian House:
"Joins the members of the Tasmanian Armenian, Assyrian and Greek communities in honouring the memory of the approximately 1.5 million Armenian men, women and chilren and over 1 million Assyrians and Greeks who fell victims to the first genocide of the 20th century."
This is welcome news for the descendants of the victims of the genocide and offers them closure particularly in light of the continued denial by the perpetrator state.
But while the Greek victims were correctly recognized inclusively, without regards to region, there are still some people within Australia's Greek community who continue to deny and question the Greek Genocide.
In 6 days time, the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria will host a "Pontian Genocide Memorial Seminar" to satisfy a small group of Pontic Greeks who continue to deny and/or question the legitimacy of the Greek Genocide. These Pontic Greeks feel that their ancestors suffered more than all other Greeks and deserve a genocide title of their own.
For some reason, only the Greeks are capable of such egregious behaviour.
