Two Perth music luminaries, James Baker (Hoodoo Gurus, Beasts of Bourbon, Scientists) and Dom Mariani - Official (The Stems, DM3, Datura4 Band) have come together to record a wonderful new single under the moniker of The James Baker Beat.
‘Friday Night Friends’ and ‘She Said (Bad Weekend)’ both penned by James and Dom are classic garage punk and pop fare which recall the rock and roll sounds and tradition of both the early Scientists and Stems.
James Baker is unfortunately battling liver cancer. James is the backbeat, and the hammer and tongs drummer to the soundtrack of your misspent, angst-ridden youth – and let’s face it - to your modern day obsession of good music on your Spotify list.
From one of the most influential punk anthems (Victims – Television Addict) ; to the pre-swamp pop n’roll leanings (The Scientists – ‘Frantic Romantic’/‘Last Night) ; to the tall-tale future of the term Australian Super Group (The Beasts of Bourbon – Axemans Jazz) ; to the highly celebrated timeless Oz rock classic (Hoodoo Gurus – Stoneage Romeos) – James Baker has no peers when it comes to a rock n roll curriculum vitae.

Perth's music community has come together to celebrate the life and times of its dear friend and brother, the imitable James Baker.
Over one weekend in January, a host of artists and bands influenced by James Baker will come together and donate their services as a bond of love and gratitude to help assist with his ongoing treatment.
TClancy's Fish Pub Fremantle's Fish Pub Fremantle on Jan 10 features The Kill Devil Hills, The Volcanics, Greenzo's Weird Ol' Blues and The Shakeys, while Lyric’s Underground hosts a cracker bill on Jan 11 comprised of Datura4, The Floors, Carla Geneve, The Secret Buttons and Robber's Dog.

"Covers albums by my most beloved artists are usually my least favourite. And yet, here I am, foisting one upon you, dear listener. I’m a self-taught musician, so for me recording covers was a great way of forensically pulling apart songs I love, finding out what makes them tick, and putting em back together. A science experiment, if you will. Almost exclusively these were recorded for my friend Jon Von Goes’ radio show, JVG Radio Method, on Melbourne community radio RRR.

This is also probably my first true “solo” album, funnily enough. Everything you hear is played, sung and mixed by myself, for better or worse! The one exception being synth on “Go Solo” by Tony Featherstone.

The new album of my own songs, “Finally, A Party Record”, is coming in the new year, but here is my Christmas gift to you - a Christmas album, with no Christmas songs. How To Make Davey. Volume One (coz there’ll be more)…"

NEW VIDEO ALERT

So, it’s October 2023 at the end of Smoked Salmon's tour of France with the French lineup of Kim, Doug, Dimi & Delphine (Smoked Salmon in 3D on the merch tee shirts). Dimi’s got some connections and gets the band a couple of days recording near his home.

The band is embarking on its 2nd Australian tour since recording its debut album (out next February). The single is #2 on the AIR ( look it up) charts 1st week in. Following their 1st film clip for "How Did They Ever Manage" they’ve re-enlisted the considerable talents of Benny J Ward Music to do what he would with lip synced footage from the band members interspersed with some crazy ink drawn visions of Hell from Kim. The results are somewhat like being in an episode of Get Smart at a Kaos party and someone’s spiked the punch with acid and there’s fuzz guitar and day glow triple exposure all round! What’s not to love about it!

Smoked Salmon's debut album, which is self-titled, will be released on February 28, 2025, and will comprise a selection of new material that sits seamlessly alongside 'the old stuff you love' (ie The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon & The Surrealists and Antenna), all lovingly performed by an international cast.
