“The publishing industry has a long way to go in terms of diversity. We may be able to read more stories by writers from marginalised communities, but the structure needs to be changed from the inside. Publishing in Australia is still predominantly white, cisgender and heterosexual — from the agents, to the editors, to the marketing and publicity teams, to the booksellers, to the interviewers and hosts. It’s not enough for major publishing houses to have a small diversity board or token hires; if we want true diversity and representation, we need systematic change.”

“[A great short story is] one that grabs you immediately, tugs you along and pops you out the other end before you realise a few thousand words have passed. What does this for me is a combination of beautiful, understated prose, emotive characters, subtle but effective twists and a full-bodied storyline that makes you pause at the end, story still in hand. Do that in a tight space and I’m yours.”

“It seems that the way diverse works are treated is indicative of larger assumptions placed on diverse individuals. Publishing doesn’t exist in a vacuum…I also think sometimes people want diverse authors to articulate their experiences in a specific way. Authentic, yet novel; vulnerable, but consumable. I don’t think representation is that simple.”

“I was inspired [to write this story] by the subtle ways in which immigrant women in my life and my community fight to hold on to their identity despite often being held back by ideals and cultural norms that reach out to them from far away. There are unspoken scripts that many women in my community are taught to memorise from a young age – how to speak, dress, breathe, dream. However, I also wanted to highlight that these women have so many dreams for themselves and their children, which they bring to life through hard work and sacrifice.”

“My favourite short stories are the ones that have absolute confidence in the world they build. Because you just don’t have time in a short story to fully develop the context, having the self-assurance to not explain everything, to give just the right amount of detail, is so important. It’s a real balancing act, but the ones that pull it off are the ones that leave the deepest impressions on me.”

“I’m always interested in how concepts like class, race and gender influence relationships and everyday interactions in ways we aren’t always aware of or are willing to acknowledge. “Unless our leaders take full responsibility for their own failings, abuse culture will continue to thrive inside parliament, setting a corrupt standard for the rest of the nation. It rots from the top. And by “full responsibility”, I mean proactive, preventative measures — not these reactive, bandaid, electioneering stunts like acknowledging past harm at the last minute. If you don’t take a strong stance to condemn abuse, you enable it.” – Grace Tame

ABOUT THE BOOK

Taukiri was born into sorrow. Auē can be heard in the sound of the sea he loves and hates, and in the music he draws out of the guitar that was his father’s. It spills out of the gang violence that killed his father and sent his mother into hiding, and the shame he feels about abandoning his eight-year-old brother to a violent home.

But Taukiri’s brother, Ārama, is braver than he looks, and he has a friend, and his friend has a dog, and the three of them together might just be strong enough to turn back the tide of sadness.

“The women and girls of Australia deserve so much better than an improvement in the way that we publicly discuss the dangers that they face at home and in their daily lives. Put another way, last year wasn’t a march for acknowledgement. It wasn’t a march for coverage. It wasn’t a march for language. It was a march for justice. And that justice demands real change in our laws, as well as in our language, in our national culture, as well as our national conversation.” — Brittany Higgins

"In the face of continuing lockdowns, including widespread school closures, women are leaving their full-time jobs to care for children who may now be learning from home. This decision for women to be the ones to leave their job, moreover, is driven in large part by the reality that a wage gap persists for women, reinforcing long-standing stereotypes that women’s jobs are less important and less essential than men’s."

"A great short story propels the reader forward, each line making you want to read the next one and the next and the next. Every detail, every sentence works hard to advance the narrative. Nothing should be superfluous. If your character is eating an egg sandwich at the bus stop, ask yourself why. Every detail has to reveal something about a character or situation, but it also needs to keep the story moving."

"My last remaining grandparent, my maternal grandmother, died the week my first child was born. So I wasn’t able to go to the funeral, and I hadn’t seen her in years. It’s a very specific type of grief, grieving for a family member you’re so disconnected from. So while it wasn’t my intention before I started, writing this story was cathartic. It was a way of distilling my own complicated feelings about being part of a diaspora onto the page."

“As much as there are things I absolutely love about breastfeeding, the intense bonding, the convenience of being a walking milk bar, the calories it supposedly burns, the truth is I didn’t actually know what I was signing up for. Not that knowing the challenges would have changed my decision to breastfeed – just saying a little heads up might have been nice,” writes Amelia Wasserman.
