🚧 UPDATE ON ROAD REPAIRS IN CHARTERS TOWERS 🚧

Council understands the frustration caused by road conditions following recent flooding. Council appreciates all reports of potholes and damage, and is working as quickly as possible and prioritising areas where roads are severely impassable.

Currently, Council has inspected approximately 37% of our extensive 3808km road network. It's a challenging task to assess and prioritise repairs to ensure safety for all road users.

Emergent Works are underway to restore access and ensure public safety. This includes immediate actions like debris clearing and temporary repairs in severely affected areas. Please bear with us as we work through these critical repairs.

We kindly ask for your patience and understanding during this time. Rest assured, the safety and longevity of Charters Towers’ regions road infrastructure remain our top priority.

Charters Towers residents and the business community are advised Charters Towers has moved to a 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟰 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: - 𝗡𝗢 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗻𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗻𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀. Following the successful installation of the temporary intake yesterday afternoon, Council is now able to move back to a Level 4 water restriction.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞?
- The main intake used to source water is believed to be blocked and this is impacting the ability of the Weir Pump Station to pump water.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘄?
- On Saturday, 15 February 2025 the river height dropped to a safe level to gain access to undertake the temporary restoration works required.
- Initial reports show the temporary restoration works for installation of the intake were successful and Council has commenced pumping water from the Weir.
- Council will continue to monitor the restrictions over the next few days and will consider options to be able to lower restrictions further.
-It is important to note, permanent works to the intake, cannot be completed until the river level drops considerably and is safe to access.

Level 4 Water Restrictions:
- NO watering (Yes, this does include turning off sprinkler systems, no hand held watering, no hosing of paths, driveways and outdoor areas. Automatic irrigation systems should be turned off.)

This means the Charters Towers community must continue to remain vigilant with water usage, ensuring water is conserved where possible.

ACTION DUE TO INFRASTRUCTURE FAILURE DUE TO FLOODING

**As at 9:00pm Thursday, 13 February 2025 **

Charters Towers residents and the business community are advised Charters Towers is now on a Level 5 water restriction - essential use only: drinking water, only flushing your toilet when necessary, showering (maximum 3 minutes).

This water restriction is in place to ensure water supply is maintained while temporary restoration works are undertaken to the water intake.

Charters Towers residents and the business community are to only use water for:

Level 5 Water Restrictions – Essential Use Only
• Drinking water
• Only flushing the toilet when needed
• Showering (maximum 3 minutes)

Council staff will be reaching out directly to the business community impacted by these restrictions from tomorrow morning.

Daily updates will continue to be provided to the community.

UPDATE FROM CHARTERS TOWERS LOCAL DISASTER MANAGEMEMT GROUP

Following further flood warning advice issued from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) today, it is anticipated the Macrossan Bridge at Sellheim will remain closed for another few days.

Parts of our region experienced significant rainfall overnight that has seen a number of roads remain closed.

Any updates for road closures and further flood warnings will be communicated as and when received.

The Charters Towers Local Disaster Management Group is working with lead agencies to support those in need.

Plan your journey carefully and do not drive in flood prone areas during wet weather. Now is not the time to be taking any unnecessary trips.

There are a number of mobile phone black spots in regional areas and it may not be possible to call for help.

Don’t risk getting stuck between creeks or crossings as assistance may not be forthcoming if emergency services are unable to reach you.

Rescue, evacuation or resupply for stranded motorists puts the lives of emergency services and volunteers at risk.

Please be patient and mindful that this flood event is impacting a number of areas across North Queensland. Emergency Services, freight operators, business owners and Local Government staff are working around the clock to ensure everyone is safe, has access to essential services and is kept updated as quickly as possible.
