Anyone with a passing interest in early and mid-2000s progressive breaks will know the name Fretwell. The Sheffield producer’s lush take on the sound was signed to renowned labels from Bedrock to the Baroque Records breaks off-shoot Electrofly.

Most notable for us, he contributed the exquisite “Faceless” to Anthony Pappa’s Balance 006.

His recent work for labels like Zero Tolerance and Reworck makes it clear that the producer still possesses the magic that made him such a reliable force.

In his first DJ mix in over a decade, he delivers a fluid 80-minute set in which his credentials are well and truly on display. Featuring tracks from James Harcourt, Luke Chable & Steve May, Forty Cats, and Robert Babicz, this one demands repeated listens.

Sistersweet is a DJ/producer and radio host from Moscow, Russia, and a resident of the local Digital Emotions crew. she is slowly building an impressive production portfolio with releases on labels like Balkan Connection and SkyTop, and AH-Digital alongside upcoming signings for The Soundgarden.

A Sistersweet mix skillfully blends progressive with the more organic strain of house, a fusion which is finding favor globally. That sound is on full display in this special conceptual mix.

Consisting of unofficial remixes of stone-cold classics, she runs through contemporary takes from producers like Emi Galvan and Eichenbaum of well-known artists including Tycho, Moby, and Everything but The Girl. Watch out for the excellent Mike Griego remix of the Evolution classic ‘Walking in Fire’ and Sistersweet’s own special take on Satoshi Tomiie ‘Love in Traffic’.

Modd and Metanoya collaborate on a warm 3-track excursion which doubles as their debut Balance Music release.

Russian artist Modd’s ability to create compelling audio stories is matched only by his tireless work ethic. In addition to being a resident at the Do Not Sit On The Furniture club in Miami, among other residencies, he is the founder of the Something Special and Amulanga labels. Following Circulation’s debut Balance outing, he collaborates with newcomer Metanoya for a deep three-track Balance release that oozes class.

Noel Sanger Music is a Florida native with a career in progressive house and trance spanning nearly three decades. Starting on classic imprints like Limbo and Release Recordings, he went on to work with artists like Erasure, Nadia Ali, John Taylor of Duran Duran, and Markus Schulz. Today, he runs Dissident Records, a label boasting tracks from artists like Kamilo Sanclemente, Jamie Stevens, G*i Barone, and more.

On this Balance Selections mix, the veteran shows his pedigree with a tight mix of contemporary prog. Featuring tracks and remixes from Lemon8, Michael & Levan, Stiven Rivic, Ruben Karapetyan, and more, this is 90 minutes of class.

Few DJs capture the imagination of prog punters like Australia’s Anthony Pappa. Known for his technical proficiency and ability to mix tracks with surgical precision, he is a generational talent who rightfully became a pivotal scene figure.

With a sound rooted in darker, rebellious tones, he fully embodied the underground at a time when the term still held weight.

Achieving what Pappa did requires a life filled with experiences. Given the way social media, marketing, and promotion have transformed the scene, his story is unlikely to be replicated.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Balance 006 mixed by Anthony Pappa DJ— an entry which holds a special place in our catalogue.

In the four years between Anthony’s breakout year in 2000 and his Balance mix in 2004, the progressive scene underwent significant shifts—from trance-y sounds to tribal house rhythms and dark atmospheres, eventually embracing melodic progressive breaks. With Anthony’s trademark harmonic mixing on full display, his Balance compilation skilfully captured this evolution and showcased his musical range in impeccable style.

This week, we celebrate this landmark mix with special content, starting with the release of the original file of Disc 1 on our SoundCloud, Apple Music and YouTube channels. With its spiritually infused take on progressive breaks, it remains as fresh today as it did 20 years ago.

For Anthony, it’s an unique entry in his discography: “I had never dedicated a full mix to breaks. That was something special.”

With releases on Mango Alley, Clubsonica, and Univack, Rocio Portillo is one of Argentina's brightest rising talents. In early 2021, she expanded her creative endeavors by forming a band with fellow Mendoza artists, Karim Sar Sar on saxophone and Valley (AR) on keyboard, guitar, and arrangements. This collaboration birthed a unique hybrid format, blending live performance with studio composition, where her distinct vocals play a central role.

Portillo dabbles in a dark, driving progressive sound best described as underground. It’s designed for smoke-filled clubs where people dance, head down, blissfully unaware of their phones.

Alongside unreleased Rocío Portillo productions, you’ll find a selection of rising talent like Juan Buitrago Artist, Agustin Lupidi, and Claudio Cornejo. This is a stomping progressive mix that doubles as a showcase for the strength of the Argentine dance scene.

Kamilo Sanclemente's recent 4 track Balance Music EP featured a strong collaboration with Juan Pablo Torrez. ‘Space Distortion’ is a deep yet taut gem that pays homage to the more serious end of the progressive spectrum.

We asked the Colombian producer what he was listening to during the EP’s production, and he obliged with a robust selection filled to the brim with dancefloor bombs.

A two-hour mix that is epic in scope and satisfying in its delivery.

It’s not surprising to hear Richie Blacker share his appreciation for fellow Irishmen and old-school revivalists Bicep. Just as they draw from scene originators like Orbital, Richie imbues his productions with the spirit of mid-90s open-field raves and Ibiza-flavored piano house.

It’s a sound resonating with notable DJs like Sasha and Skream, both whom signed him to their labels.

With Richie’s own Mess Express imprint alongside regular radio plays on Radio 1 and other stations across Europe, he shows no signs of slowing down.��

Featuring tracks from Sasha, Tinlicker, Gui Boratto, and Johannes Brecht, this is an enthralling ride through Balearica, Afro house, and contemporary prog - curated by one of Ireland's best.

Just Her made two Balance appearances this year. First, through the exquisite single, ‘Lifted’, featured as the closing track on mix one of the Balance presents Dave Seaman and Quivver compilation. That was followed by an exquisite Balance Selections session which really showcased what makes electronic music so exciting in 2024.

Her musical expertise has deep roots, and we were intrigued to explore that playlist. We asked the Constant Circles owner to divulge the tracks which shaped her into the hi-bug she is today; those vital and/or inspiring tracks which played a role in her journey.

It’s revealing that what John Graham aka Quivver considers an essential Balance Series entry is also one of our most adventurous.

Joris Voorn described that mix as 'painting with music'; a description you can apply to Quivver productions too.

Comparisons aside, it’s hard to disgree with John’s take on Balance Series number 14: “He did such a great job of that mix, soooo f🏹cking cool and groovy.”

You will find new takes on those trusty adjectives in the recent Balance Presents Dave Seaman and Quivver compilation. It’s a project three years in the making which sounds as though the duo twinkered on it for twice that time.

It’s been four years since Sweden’s EMPHI announced himself with a release on Yotto's Odd One Out imprint.

The name of Steven Weston is gaining more prominence, which is well overdue given his impressive music career. The London-based artist has engineered diverse acts from Rudimental to reggae’s Chronixx, and toured the world playing keyboards for the likes of Ladyhawke and Charli XCX. Now the producer is finally carving a solo career.

With tracks from GMJ Music, Durante, UNKLE, and Duo State, this sharp 60 minute mix highlights a student of music who lives and breathes the intricacies of the sound to which he has dedicated himself.

‘Nostalgia’, the debut LP from Alex O'Rion, might turn out to be one of 2024’s best full-length releases. With tracks that range from Boards of Canada-inspired electronica to jazz-inflected deep house, it presents a 14-track journey that might surprise a few. We took some time with the Dutch producer to discuss what makes this album such a satisfying listen.

If the first mix is the spiritual and centred friend you’ll happily introduce to your parents, the second mix is the kid your parents warned you about—the one who smoked cigarettes at school. It’s a devilishly hard mix to deny, an adventurous ride through some of the dankest tech-prog the 2004 circuit had to offer.
