This week it's 'Yellowface' by Rebecca Kuang, performed in two formats by two brilliant narrators: the audiobook with Helen Laser and BBC Sounds' 'Book at Bedtime' with Ashleigh Haddad.

Does episodic vs full book mean different perceptions of the story or the characters?

Let's chat!

Matthew and Steve fail to recommend ‘The Light We Carry” by Michelle Obama.

Steve Phillips and Matthew Layton present £AudioBookClub - the podcast that reviews and recommends audiobooks.

On this episode:

Steve and Matthew welcome Helena Sheffield, Senior Marketing Manager, Penguin Random House Audio onto their pod.

Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go according go to plan.

Matthew couldn’t quite find it in his heart to recommend that you, gentle listener spend an Audible credit on 9 hours and 59 minutes of your life on Michelle Obama’s new self-help book and instead started playing clips from Barack Obama’s ‘A Promised Land’

Coincidentally that also happens to be the audiobook that Helena bought for her father as a Christmas present last year.

Helena gives us some fantastic insight into how the audiobook business works - from casting to marketing via the long, har slog in the recording studio - and gives us a fistful of excellent listening recommendations:

On the latest edpisode of

https://audiobookclub.libsyn.com/the-lazarus-heist-with-geoff-white

Steve and Matthew speak to journalist and author Geoff White about his new audiobook 'The Lazarus Heist'.

The book is based on the BBC's award winning podcast series of the same name and, in both formats, Geoff tells the story of the Lazarus Group - an elite group of North Korean government-backed hackers.

This is the first time we've encountered an audiobook based on a podcast series, so we ask ourselves and Geoff what the difference between the two formats is, both for him as an author/journalist/presenter and for us as listeners.

We also touch upon the differences between working for the BBC and for a publishing company like Penguin; and Geoff reminds us that while we haven't necessarily seen many visible signs of any cyber fallout from the war in Ukraine, there is a lot of defensive effort being undertaken in places like GCHQ and Fort Meade.

Matthew and Steve have a rummage around Audible's new 'all-you-can-read' service Audible Plus.

Is it the transformative experience for the audiobook subscription model that we've all been waiting for, or just a receptacle for audio off-cuts?

We also look forward to the impending State Visit of the man we're not afraid to call 'The Greatest Audiobook Producer of All Time': Dirk Maggs.

He's the production maestro responsible for the original 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' series and Audible's production of Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' and he'll be joining Matthew and Steve on the next episode of on 1st December.
