👀 So excited to jam w/ @ashkanshafiei in the next instalment of our monthly takeover at the @acehotelsydney 🎺
Migrating from Tehran to Sydney four years ago, Ashkan has been singing and performing from an early age. His interest, amongst other things, is in finding ways to use the Rubab, a traditional Persian instrument, in contemporary contexts.
Ashkan says ~
“I like to bring positive vibes to people with my music. I also want them to experience a different side of Iranian contemporary music, which is amazing but didn’t get a chance to be heard much around the world because of Iran’s revolution in 1978 and the harsh band and censorship on music and the arts that came with it. I use lots of melodic features and form elements from that musical era in my songs.”
Come rock with us Wednesday, July 17 w/ guest selector @vibepositive.bb from 6pm in the Lobby 🍸

“We often think of creation as a solitary act, or the enterprise of lone genius, which is a very individualised, western framework to think about creativity. But what we really think is remarkable about art is not only the process of making; but the friendships and communities created in that process. At the heart of it, there is a certain kind of devotion to art and to each other.
Naarm is home to a generative, thriving ecosystem of music, arts and culture, and we are constantly astounded by the work that is produced on Wurundjeri land. At the risk of being over-earnest, we feel seriously lucky to be able to make work, collaborate and see it all. Seeing other people’s work is what inspires us to want to keep making work.”
🎇 very, very excited to have Lotus Threads joining us for @mindy_mengwang & @sui_zhen’s album launch tonight!! 🎆
Panda & Hannah were kind enough to tell us a bit about their art practice and their experiences working here in Naarm/Melbourne. We can’t wait to see the show IRL!

🗣️ Where did you grow up? What can you tell us about your formative years - some memories, feelings or emotions that stand out?
“I grew up in Perth/Booraloo. The main thing that stands out is probably living in this old heritage listed house in North Perth up until I started high school. It was nicknamed the elephant house; I remember just running around with my five siblings.”
🗣️ How long have you been living in Naarm/Melbourne? What do you think about this place?
~ “I’ve been living in Melbourne since 2021, moved here with my younger brother. I feel like I’m still pretty fresh here. I feel like there’s a lot of things going on which is great but hard to keep track of, and the fact that it’s so big, there’s always something new that I’m constantly finding.”
🗣️ In your family, or at home, is there a strong culture of music and dancing? What role has music played in your life?
~ “Music was always a bit of a weird one in our family. They were quite religious in the early years of me growing up, and music was not something you did, but there would be little cracks here and there, for example my mum and dad being huge Prince and Michael Jackson fans. The main person that really got me into music was my older brother, he got me into music like J Dilla and Portished when I was 12/13, and would constantly introduce me to an eclectic range of music.”
🗣️ What does that word ‘home’ mean to you?
~ “Home to me means a lot of people talking and laughing loudly, which makes me feel safe and comfortable.”

Thank you to Sui Zhen for these words that capture the only way in which we can continue to work when faced with such hardship in the world ~
“Upholding the truth and our stories through alternative mediums like music is an act of resistance, an act of preservation, and an act of love. Gathering and experiencing music together, and giving time to these activities enables us to express our own humanity in a collective embrace.”
See you there Feb 9. Reach out here if you need support in purchasing a ticket. 💕💝💞

“…this song is about the Malian bid for freedom, and it was recorded in solidarity here in Senegal. The French abandoned Mali, and many countries in West Africa. The Europeans have been controlling Africa economically for a long time, and now is the first time Mali has decided to be free, not to be controlled anymore by their French colonisers.
Everyone is helping Mali to be independent. This is our contribution, a contribution by Senegalese and Malian artists to raise their voices and say ‘Freedom!’”

The new album ~ Feb 2, 2024
First single ‘Farafina’ streaming now 🥵
“This song is about young Africans, going to Europe thinking they will get a better life than in Africa.
This song says it’s time to return back home, and try to make home a better place for Africans, because there is no way that Europeans will develop Africa for the Africans.
This is a voice for all African people, who live outside or inside Africa.
Khalifa Koné, the singer, he says more. He talks about men, women, how they get to where they are. Some people go through the desert, they disappear and cannot reach their dream, because they don’t have any another solution. They choose any way to try and get out of Africa.
That’s why I say this album is very political, it is about the government. Our population are running away from home because of disappointment in the government. The government aren’t doing the right things. Farafina is about that, and it is a heavy song.”
Boubacar Gaye of @ausecumabeats on the band’s new single, released today. ‘Farafina’ is taken from their third full-length album, Dakar Bamako, recorded over a ten day period in Dakar, Senegal in 2022.
Album out February 2024 💽
A message from Boubacar Gaye of @ausecumabeats ⚠️
~ something is coming this week on Wednesday, Nov 15.
This one is extra special for Boubacar and Bassidi Koné, and features heavily their home cities of Dakar, Senegal and Bamako, Mali.
More soon. New music out Wednesday! 🚗
“There are so many things you learn after you lose a parent. What you have unknowingly inherited from your parent’s life. Intergenerational trauma…patterns of behaviour.
My mum had to assimilate as soon as she moved to Australia. I spoke to Mindy about how I felt sad, that I dont know how to speak her language.
My mum grew up in Sarawak. She had a fractured language upbringing. Her experience of coming to Australia was — “I am just going to learn what I need to fit in here.” It was only a few years after the White Australia policy ended.
So Mindy and I spoke about that experience - Mindy had that same experience in the UK, being in a new culture, not having any English. The frustration of that.”
@sui_zhen on reconnecting with her mother Yih-Fye‘s experience of migration via the new album, ‘Origin of You’, out tomorrow!
Sui Zhen would like to dedicate this release to her son Percy Jiè Sōng and her mother Yih-Fye. Mindy dedicates this release to her father 王继光.
🗣️ @mindy_mengwang @sui_zhen
In late 2022, Boubacar Gaye and Bassdi Koné, members of the Melbourne-based Afro-Cuban ensemble @ausecumabeats , returned to West Africa in the culmination of an idea that had been brewing since the world first went into lockdown in early 2020. The pair wanted to return to their homes in Dakar and Bamako respectively, to be reunited with family, friends, country, and with the vibrant music communities in those cities they had left behind when emigrating to Australia.
The result: Dakar Bamako, the band’s third full-length album featuring a total of fourteen musicians from three cities around the world.
Coming in 2024 💫

❤️🩹 @sui_zhen & @mindy_mengwang talk about some of the themes from their forthcoming album ‘Origin of You’ 💽
Out on November 10, the album centres around our continual shift in understandings of our identity and our self; coming to terms with who you are, where you are from, and where you will go. It is about life, death, and birth. And it is about transformation: from daughter into woman, woman into mother, from outsider into friend.
