“I first came to music through having a mother and sisters who ritually played records and watched film clips with me from a young age.

Except for one year in Naarm, I have always lived on Gadigal Land and for the last 10 years have been heavily rooted in the music and arts community here. I love our ability to navigate dull venue situations and create moments of connection through ingenuity.

I try to play the right thing at the right time for the occasion. Try to communicate a steady groove with pops of joy, beauty and warmth.”

“…I grew up in a small beautiful city in the north of Iran, close to the Caspian sea, called Gorgan. The city is surrounded by Hyrcanian forests and farms. In the spring, you can hear the scent of citrus in the air.

The autumn is spectacular in Gorgan with all the colours. I remember taking long walks to and from school and also weekend hikings with my friends with some occasional jammings in the forest.

My older brother bought a Yamaha C40 guitar and took a few lessons but soon lost interest. I started playing with and exploring that guitar in a summer when I was a middle school student and it straightaway gave me a sense of calm and became my friend. I am a self taught musician, but I learned a lot from other musician friends too.

Also, singing at family gatherings was a tradition in my family. I used to sing songs with my dad, siblings and uncles. I still sing some of those songs in my gigs.”

“…my earliest memories of music involve my grandmother, who taught me how to play the piano, and my mother, who introduced me to many of my all-time favorite artists and genres. Reflecting on those times fills me with joy and happiness, especially since music has been intertwined with so many of my core memories throughout life.

When I first moved here, the city felt like one endless smorgasbord of music, art, and community events, offering something for everyone. While the venue landscape has changed significantly since then, I still believe there’s an impressive array of offerings throughout the year in this city. However, more accessible spaces are needed.

Home to me means where I feel most at ease—whether that’s feeling comfortable enough in a space to decompress and regenerate or being surrounded by my loved ones in a room.”

“There are so many amazing musical perspectives to be heard, and I see programming as a way to encourage presenters to take risks and play outside of the norm.

I like the idea of club DJs playing ambient sets, record collectors playing their most introspective songs in public and first-time selectors soundtracking awkward first dates.

Hope St is special in that there is no music policy, and my ambition is for presenters and patrons to let go of any notions of how a bar should sound.”

We spoke to , music programmer at , about their approach to curating a music ahead of our ‘Winter Warmers’ dinner this Weds, July 3.

Tickets include a night of small plates handmade by Somalian chef Fatuma Muhudin, traditional West African folk music by , and selections on the decks from .au

Spaces are limited to 90 and it’s filling up quick - join us for a cosy evening or food, wine, music and storytelling at Hope St Radio 🔥

“My Dad was the one curating the music at home, anything from James Brow to Tim Maia, always black music, and I remember just been fascinated with cassette tapes, sounds from a cassette or records, it was something magic when i was a kid.

My introduction to music was from radio at home, and my dad’s records. Music is a very crucial element in every big cultural celebration back home, so it’s natural be involved and interested.

As a performer my mood really influences what i’m choosing to play. The rhythm is always first idea of where i want to start, samba, funk, or more urban sounds. Also songs that have personal values, memories or tunes that inspired me in general.

[at ]… I’ll be selecting songs from some of my favorite artists back home. Rhythms such as Carimbó from northeast, Axe original sounds from Bahia…jazz/samba, also AfroFunk will be in my bag too…a soulful journey is safe to say.”

“My mum and dad met in Khartoum, Sudan, where my mum was born and raised. Mum immigrated to Meanjin in the 80’s, where my dad was from, as did her whole family around the same time. I was baptised Coptic Orthodox and going to church in my earlier years gave me a strong connection to my culture, my family and the wider Coptic community.

I think that environment has influenced the music I produce. A lot of warm melodic vocals, reverbed walls of sound. Other than sound, the space is imbued with symbolism and ritual that involve all the senses.

I think so many artists are doing incredible things here in Naarm, but there is not enough investment in local talent. Funders/bookers are too scared to take ‘risks’ on artists trying new things or being innovations in their field, so they go overseas to find their community. The folks that stay and build stuff up are often doing it off their own backs.”

DJ, producer, youth worker, textile artist —> will be joining us for a set at Winter Solstice Market this Saturday! 🙌

“I grew up in a little village called Djoliba, in the southeast of Mali and the heart of Mandeng country. It’s about 30km from the capital city Bamako, and close to the border of Guinea Conakry.

‘Djoliba’ means river of blood in the Mandeng language, and is the Mandeng name for the River Niger, which is the life blood running through the centre of landlocked Mali.

The way I see it, Mandeng culture and music is still not well known or understood in the Melbourne community, and I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to share Mandeng music, heritage and traditions with the public and my Australian musician comrades.“

Excited to have the griot master joining us this Saturday Winter Solstice Night Market 💥

“I love the diversity of musicians in Melbourne, there are always new acts and musicians coming. I hate the fact that small music venues have suffered so much and many have closed. I hate streaming services, in hypocritical terms. I love and support independent live music and musicians as much as I can.

Paco de Lucia said that when you walk on stage and perform you are saying ’this is who I am’. Honesty seems like a good place to start.”

“ I grew up between Australia and the Arabian Gulf moving back and forth between Boorloo, Muscat and Dubai. My parents met in Amman where my extended family on both sides sought refuge… soon after my parents made the decision to migrate to Australia, with the focus on ensuring we had passports and a legal identity due to growing up under occupation in Palestine.

I have been based in Naarm for five and a half years now, I am extremely grateful to be surrounded by such inspirational and creative people every day.

In the club my raging ADHD takes over where I focus on a slow burn build of layered energy. I mix fast, and sitting in the blend for majority of the session, I like to see how much energy I can draw out of the listener.”

“I was born and grew up in Iran a few years before the 1979 Revolution. The scents of change, family, and many complex feelings stand out…

Many of these echos come through to my music; unsettled, hopeful and sometimes humorous in its gestures and sounds.

I love all the blessings that the land and the spirits offer us, I know very little about the true stories of each of the pathways and meeting places in Naarm which I have grown to love; eager to learn everyday.

I want to play on the streets, off streets, to take my guitar, a mic and my looper pedal around quiet street corners and listen and play; make up new melodies, rhythms and words as they arrive and learn to respect and be.”

“…everything was different when I came to Australia.

I had been used to playing with one band and getting paid every week. I had to build a band which was really hard, as musicians here did not understand African rhythms.

It took me time to teach people to play my music, and then to get work for the band.”

🎁 proud owner of a brand new album! 📦

Boubacar Gaye of is stoked to welcome the band’s third studio album ‘Dakar Bamako’ into the world.

Says Bouba…”The first idea came after recording a lot of music in Melbourne - I had been feeling like it’s time for the music to reach Africa too. We have all migrated to Australia but we represent Africa, and Cuba. It is important for our music to reach Africa. For Africa to participate. That made me think that it would be good for us to record in Senegal.

We want to give thanks to our teachers, our community in Africa where we come from. We represent African music wherever we are. It’s fusion, music from Australia and Africa.

We represent a community both in Africa and Australia - it’s important for those two nations to come together, to work together.”

It’s all down on beautifully pressed wax thanks to , made in Brisbane by ~ complete with words from the band and behind-the-scenes photos of the recording process, all lovingly brought together by 💕
