Today Territorians remember Nanna Nangala Fejo, the Warumungu woman whose story played a central role in the National Apology speech delivered by former prime minister Kevin Rudd in Federal Parliament in 2008.

Mr Rudd shared the survivor's story during his speech -

"She remembers her earliest childhood days living with her family and her community in a bush camp just outside Tennant Creek,"
"She remembers the love and the warmth and the kinship of those days long ago, including traditional dancing around the campfire at night.
"But then, sometime around 1932, when she was about four, she remembers the coming of the welfare men. Her family had feared that day, and had dug holes in the creek bank where the children could run and hide.
"What they hadn't expected was that the white welfare men didn't come alone. They brought a truck, two white men and an Aboriginal stockman on horseback.
"The kids were found. They ran for their mothers screaming, but they couldn't get away."

Ms Fejo's son, Larrakia elder Richard Fejo took to social media today to pay tribute to his late mother -

"The love you gave me, family and community is and will always be unconditional and unbreakable. You are always our light in the darkness and we will continue to fight for our people like you taught us to do!"
