In the lead-up to ANZAC Day, we pause not only to honour the soldiers who fought and fell, but also to remember those who stood beside them in different uniforms. Nurse Constance Mabel Keys, who trained at the Brisbane General Hospital (now called the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital) in Herston, was one of the first four Queensland nurses to serve overseas. Her legacy is one of many reminders that our heroes are more than just the men in the trenches.
