Introducing Isabelle Faure, Nik's Mother

Isabelle is a French Australian actress based in Canberra, Australia. She studied acting, music (piano) and visual arts in France where she was born and raised. She lived in Canada from 1990 to 1997 and moved to Australia in 2012. She enrolled in acting classes and is a graduate in the Certificate IV in Acting for Stage and Screen at Perform Australia.

"When I read the script, I felt a strong connection to the characters. I have always been interested in exploring the relationship between a mother and her child. Staying open minded to who your child is and what they want for themselves can be challenging but forces you to grow as a parent and as a human being. Nik's mother tries her best to understand her daughter through the lens of her own values. She is a loving mother and is hopeful that her love for Nik will guide her through the path of acceptance."

Introducing Jamie Couter, the person bringing Nik to life!

Jamie has been performing for years, mostly in community and school theatre productions. Performance has been an outlet for them, as well as a way to explore their identity and journey, and helped them find a community where they could express themself freely. They struggled with gender identity, expression and the expectations others had of them, and they were given a chance to represent that journey in Butterfly Skin.
The opportunity to represent their community is something very important to them, as it would have made all the difference to see someone like them while growing up. Gender identity is something so personal and unique, and the more representation there is of varied identity and expression, the better off we all are. Jamie is hoping that Butterfly Skin will help someone like them realise they aren't alone.

Introducing Gabrielle Gregoire, our amazing Cinematographer

Gabrielle is a multi-disciplinary award - winning artist, having recently completed her BA in Film Production at the University of Canberra.

Gabrielle’s unique multicultural upbringing and past travels overseas has engendered an open mind, a love for the arts and a passion for building bridges between people and culture through visual storytelling.

Gabrielle believes that art, especially film, has the power to transcend divisions in society. And through each project, artists hold an immense amount of power in creating a more loving and understanding world.

“I fell in love with Butterfly Skin from the very start. There’s a rawness to the story, and I saw aspects of my teenage self, and current self all throughout it. We are all on this human journey of discovering ourselves and our souls. And for me personally, this journey has always very much been internal. Therefore I loved the fact that there wasn’t much dialogue throughout the film. And so it meant that it was all about visual storytelling. I worked hard, alongside Ruby to refine the shots, colours and movements so that each moment, gesture, sentiment could be captured and emitted to the audience in the most authentic way possible. I know that Butterfly Skin will allow audiences to feel a sense of peace and self-acceptance with their human journey as it very much did for me. And I’m just grateful to have been a part of such a special project.”

Introducing Ruby Elliott, director of Butterfly Skin

Ruby Grew up in Canberra, the Capital of Australia. She has always been creative, whether it's singing or playing the violin, making films or taking photographs. She loves and appreciates the beauty in every creative medium. She studied a BA majoring in film at the University of Canberra and graduated in 2021. In her last year of University, she directed the film Butterfly Skin. Her vision for Butterfly Skin was to make a coming of age film that explored gender identity and fluidity in an arthouse style. The film’s narrative is divided into three chapters, subtitled ‘Her’, ‘Him’, and ‘Them’. The chapters follow the struggles and transitions of Nik, the main character, across three different gender identities. Ruby’s has always been a part of the LGBTQIA+ community as she is a rainbow baby. She grew up with two mums and a family that “always challenged gender stereotypes”. She believes that “This is a crucial time in history to keep pushing for change by deepening everyone’s awareness about how gender power relations and gender stereotypes can create unnecessary boundaries and cause suffering for so many people’’.

For one of my assignments this year, I chose to create a documentary looking into what people at the University of Canberra believe and know about January 26. For some people, January 26 is known as Australia Day, while for others, myself included, it is a day of mourning.

This NAIDOC Week, please take some time to learn more about Australia's First Nation's history, especially the history of the country you live on.
