Took this just before a huge downpour…60mm! It rained so heavy that roads flooded here for a short time. My tanks were overflowing and my garden will be lovin it!

Not sure what they were looking at? It’s been hot here for days and only 2mm of rain the other day. The weather app is telling me a chance of another 2 mm today 🤷🏻♀️. Not enough to water the garden but it makes the grass green.

Went to move this stool and saw this little fella’s leg over the edge. My grandson got a glass, coaxed it in, then put it outside, in amongst the plants. 🕷️

Barbara Ann is full on into her egg laying cycle. Unlike previous years, she has settled on laying in the nest box, but still needs to let all the neighbours know that she will lay within the next 5 hours!

I seriously do not understand how she is so clean 🤷🏻♀️. We’ve had 70mm of beautiful rain over the last week, and our soil here is red, so all the other chooks are dirty as! (Except for Priscilla, the other white silkie, she’s clean too).

You can’t have nice things with chickens! Of course they’ve claimed this seat as their own. It’s their balance bar, sundeck, posing platform and a lookout post. I’m just the person who cleans it for them 💩!

All gathered round this afternoon, just before bedtime. The purple Jacaranda tree in the neighbour’s yard is just about finished flowering. It makes a beautiful backdrop.

Little Cookie, she is a cross between a Silkie and a Satin Silkie, I think! She is tiny, has laid so many eggs and gone broody three times already. I wish she would slow down. She’s a no fuss hen, gets in and does her laying without any fanfare, then back out to get down to the business of scratching and digging. A mighty little chook❤️

Pekins bantams, in my humble opinion, do the least amount of damage to your garden. They are tiny, have short legs with feathered feet. Obviously they can still eat plants but their digging and scratching is not on par with a standard chicken!

It’s so hot and dry here, the air is dusty. We have a small chance of rain tomorrow🤞. The chooks had their wings out and their beaks open but at least they stayed in the shade of the trees and shrubs for most of the day.

International Postage costs have gone up again with !! It costs $20 to post a hat to the U.S. now! So sorry to all my international friends but it’s out of my control. I did a huge day of gardening today. The girls headed over when I sat down to have a coffee break. Twinkle Toes is not in the picture as she was at my feet, she never left my side all day!! Everything I do takes twice as long with her under foot. The second I planted something, she’s there trying to dig it out before I could get a cage around it. 🤦🏻♀️

I’ve noticed Minnie hanging around Priscilla a lot. She had just escorted her to the feeder in this pic. Normally, the two white silkies eat together at the feeder when the others are not around. So funny to see them eating together…

The weather outlook is so grim here. Probably heading back into a drought. I have used up all the water in my tanks, no rain to fill them 😏. As a gardener, it’s so depressing.

Dixie, a little ball of fluff. She is a frizzle Pekin bantam and a sweet hen. Very timid with me, like most of my chickens. I think because they’ve roamed free from the beginning, they are self sufficient and not ‘tamed’. Except for Twinkle Toes 😂.

Meet Twinkle Toes, she’s 4 months old, buff laced frizzle polish. She came from Bussle Butts & Booted Bantams. She is missing two toenails on one foot so is not show quality, which means I was lucky enough to have her for a pet. She is perfect❤️
Mary Ellen and Dixie had been brooding together, literally sitting side by side, so I got them 3, day old chicks. I usually wait till night time to put them under but I picked them up in the morning and they needed heat. This was Mary Ellen’s reaction,( the squealing you can hear is from Winnie on the other side of the box!) Straight after the video, the chicks went under the two Mamas. I kept an eye on them all day and for the first time in 10 years I have a joint parenting team! The evening ritual, putting Violet Crumble to bed. The night before I was out gardening when it started to rain so I rushed over to put her away before she got wet. I walked straight into the web! I had a chicken in one hand, the other hand was going a hundred mile per hour wiping web off my face, while jumping on the spot and swearing. I turned to see the spider still in the middle of her web,(phew), with the whole bottom part missing.
